Healthier After Babies?

Hi, I'm a mom of two who lost 80 lbs after my second baby was born 2.5 years ago. I was overweight my entire life until I decided enough was enough. I'd love to hear what other moms did to get healthy after giving birth. Thanks!

Re: Healthier After Babies?

  • I developed Gestational Diabetes while I was pregnant so that made me rethink my eating habits and that has stayed with me after having my first baby.  I have always eaten fairly healthy and tried to stay active but when I got GD during pregnancy I had to relearn how to eat (pairing protein with complex carbs, no fruit in the am or pm, no sweets, etc).  After baby I still try to stick to a fairly low carb high protein diet. I probably don't exercise as much as I should but I do try to at least walk or do something active everyday.

  • Google Maria kang's blog and read her no excuses section. Very inspirational.
  • I am definitely much healthier after baby, and probably the healthiest I have ever been (pretty sad when you consider I will be 40 in just over a month).  This was not something that happened immediately after giving birth but more like something that kick in perhaps about a month before my LO's first birthday.  Something as mundane as trying on bathing suits at Target...and it wasn't even that traumatic of an experience, just caused something to click in me.  I became a woman on a mission and have dropped 40 lbs. from that day (as well as 40 lbs. from my pre-pregnancy weight), 50 lbs. since going back to work after maternity leave.  At first it was exercise and watching what I ate...and then towards the end of last year I started leaning more towards clean eating and more recently following more of a paleo diet (which I veered from this week and apparently paid for in more ways than one...lesson learned).  I have started running (something I never though I would be able to do), following a C25K program...started that in mid-January...finished last week and I continue to run a few days a week.  Also more of a concentrated effort with weight lifting and adding more things at home as well (Jillian MIchaels Yoga Meltdown and 6-Pack abs, a BOSU ball, kettle bells, etc.).  And I had to set some goals for myself...one was being able to do a 5k and another is being able to rock a bikini on my 40th birthday.
