Natural Birth

Intro

Hi ladies,
I just found out I am pregnant with my second child. I am currently ten weeks. With my first, I had a terrible delivery 32 hours of labor, 4 hours of pushing, vaccuum extraction, hemoraging and I think a lot of it had to do with my epidural which didn't help with the pain at all. Needless to say, I am very nervous about labor this time but am hoping to go natural. What should I start doing now to try to prepare myself?

  • Consider hiring a doula. A doula is amazing support and can help you work through some of your previous experience and come up with a plan for your next birth.

Read. I like "Your Best Birth" for a good early pregnancy read.

  • I'm FTM and was terrified by childbirth in general. I started by reading a practical guide on labor (The good birth companion) to understand what happens with your body. Then I started reading positive med-free birth experiences and that got me really

  • I agree with PPs, read, read, read.  There are a lot of great books on natural birth (Ina May, Henci Goer etc.) they will educate you on L&D and what to expect.  Having a supportive coach is also important.  They will help you believe i
  • I also learned a lot watching the documentary "The Business of Being Born." It was really inspiring, and helped tipped the scale towards my decision of going natural.

  • I would start with Ina May's Guide to Childbirth by Ina May Gaskin. It is such a wonderfully positive book.

Hiring a doula is also a great idea. The doula works for no one but you and is totally on your team.

Stay active, eat well, keep busy -- and start now!  I found a lot of benefit in prenatal yoga classes that combined relaxation techniques with body-strengthening workouts.  I also walked every day, hiked/swam on weekends, and was working full

  • Thanks ladies for all the advice. I am very nervous about labor this time around and know I need to start planning now. I thought about a midwife but I love my OB and he is 100 the reason I did not have a c section last time. I was basically telling him t

  • I had a similar experience the first time around.  This time, I hired a doula, found a midwife practice I trusted, am birthing at a stand alone birth center, and took a Hypnobirthing class with my husband.  These things have given me the confide
