Advice on colds

My DD appears to have her first cold :( She's been very congested today (especially when nursing) and is sneezing more frequently then usual. Also, during diaper changes when laying flat she coughs quite a bit. Her temp is normal and I called the doc and they said to just watch her temp and watch for wheezing.

Dr's office also suggested a cool mist humidifier (which we just got today) and saline drops with the bulb syringe (which we've been doing). Just wondered if anyone else had advice on how to keep her comfortable? She usually sleeps in her swing so she won't be flat which is good. But she seems really fussy while nursing (probably because of congestion) and it just breaks my heart.

Also, if your LO has already had a cold how long did it last? The Dr.'s office wants her to come in tomorrow just as precaution if she doesn't improve (though I'm not sure what they can do for her.) I'm a FTM so I'm of course a little freaked out. I always said I wouldn't be the mom who freaks out about sniffles but I hate seeing her uncomfortable :(

Re: Advice on colds

  • DD had her first cold at 2 weeks and it lasted about 10 days. Doc said as long as she wasn't struggling to breathe like, you'd be able to see her ribs with each breath and was eating okay, and didn't have a fever, that she was okay. She stopped coughing

  • If you nurse her lying flat, see if she'll nurse sitting upright more...I usually nurse DS cross legged with him sitting on my lap so he's pretty well upright.

  • My LO just got over her first cold. Took a week for congestion to go away almost fully. I swear by the nosefrida. The idea of it is kinda gross but it works so well compared to the bulb sucker thing.  Worth the investment and definitely made her more
  • When my LO has been congested I've turned the shower on full blast hot to steam up the bathroom . I will sit in the bathroom with her for a while. She always seems to like it and gets some relief from it. Good luck!
  • I second the NoseFrida! It really is amazing and SO much better than the bulb syringe. DD2 caught a cold from DD1 at 3 weeks (thanks, day care!) and wound up the hospital for one night. She's been sort of congested ever since and once every night I have
  • This is a bit if a side note but I recently bought the Nose Freda b/c our little one was congested and I LOVE IT! It is sooo much better that the asperator.

  • DS didn't have a very bad cold, he was congested but never really had a cough. We used a cool mist humidifier around the clock (we have one in the family room and one in our bedroom where DS sleeps). We used saline drops and a battery operated nasal as
