Hi! I am considering having the placenta encapsulated after the birth of our child this June and want to hear about other mom's experience with it? Pros/cons...
YES! thanks for posting -- i just posted over in Eco-Friendly Families and it seems you beat me to it here!
Read up on a bit and it peaked an interest. I've read that the placenta fights PPD, give you energy and
helps milk suppy. Also it gives the mother a boost of nutrients and
supplies baby with a familiar-nutrient rich milk. But i don't think i could stomach to eat it.. dehydrated, mixed with herbs, and encapsulated seems to be the way to go, perhaps?
I'd especially like to hear from
mothers who didn't with one child but did with another..Really just
wanna educate myself as much as possible.
There are several ways to do it. You can put a raw bit in a smoothie which is good if you're bleeding heavily or completely exhausted. You can dehydrate it raw and encapsulate, which is good for quick bursts of energy, or steam it (with or without herbs) then dehydrate and encapsulate The later is good for long term healing, more of a slow and steady release than the raw version. Or you can ferment it in a tincture or essence, both of which keep for a very long time (decades in the case of a tincture), and are suggested for mood stablizing and galactagogues when your milk supply takes a dip during menstrual cycles.
Western medicine hasn't caught up very quickly, but they have actually started to do some human studies of Chinese medicinal use of "hominis placenta" (Zi He Che). Here's one relevant to menopause: https://informahealthcare.com/doi/abs/10.3109/13697137.2012.696290
I had mine encapsulated and they were like energy pills. I couldn't even take them in the afternoons because I wouldn't be able to sleep at night. They really helped level my emotions and give me energy during the day. What new mom doesn't want that?
. Wow, that sounds pretty great. We're there any herbs in the pills too, or was it just the placenta?
I did it and loved it. I could really tell a difference on the days I did not take the pills. I also never had an issue with my milk supply. I do not know if that is directly related to taking the pills or not but it was great not to stress about supply.

I think my pills had ginger, lemon, and garlic (?) in them but I do not remember exactly.
I did encapsulation and I'm really glad I did. It's helped with baby blues, and my milk supply. You can also take it for energy too. The one thing that convinced my DH to be on board was that I can keep it in my freezer forever. It will last until you hit menopause and you can use it then too. The cons for me was the cost. It was 250 dollars, but worth it!
I did not with Ds and I did not suffer from PPD or even baby blues, but I did have milk supply issues. (I don't know if it's bc I did not ingest the placenta, or bc I got bad advice to give formula to "help him sleep." Either way, I had issues.)
I watched as a friend of mine battled severe PPD after her 2nd pregnancy (twins) and she said "if I'd have known about it, I would've done it in a heart beat. Just do it."
I do not notice specific mood changes this time, as I feel pretty healthy mentally after both my pregnancies. (There's just no way of knowing before hand!) But I do notice after taking my pills, my milk comes in abundantly. It's strange PP says she gets an energy jolt and can't take them before bed bc that's when I take mine usually and I sleep just fine! I'm also waking up to nurse every 2hrs or so, so I'm a zombie....over all, I'm happy with my experience! Oh, and I do not known what if any herbs went into it.

Thanks for posting this! I'm very interested in placenta encapsulation as well, and I wasn't exactly sure where to get started. I would love to hire someone to do it for me, to be honest; I know I COULD do it myself, but I also know my limits, and since I'll have a toddler and a newborn at home, I'm not sure how realistic that is. Problem is, I don't think there are any placenta encapsulation specialists in my area. I sent an email to my midwives and asked them if they knew of anyone who did it, and I'm waiting to hear back from them.

I'm planning on having this done and I'm so excited about it! I had PPD with DS2 and I've always had milk supply issues so I figured it can't hurt to try it out I'll be having my 3rd c-section (failed VBAC last time) so I'm hoping to get the capsules back ASAP to aid in recovery. I'd even consider a piece thrown into a smoothie if that would even be a possibility...not sure of the logistics on that since I'll be in the hospital for several days. maybe i can find a really nice person to do this for me There are several people in my area that encapsulate so when I get further along I'll do more research.
