Help me pick a new car. Mazda 3 Hatchback?

What midsized vehicle should I get? Does anyone have a Mazda 3 Hatchback? Can you fit a car seat in the back? How about 2 of them? I love my midsized sedan that I have now, but I'm looking to get a new car soon. I don't want an SUV, but I like the idea of a hatchback. Please fill me in on info.

We have a toddler, hopefully another kid in the future, a boxer/pit (rides in the car often because our parents both live out of town), we travel out of town a lot.

  • We have a lab, a two year old, and an 8 month old.  I'm not sure you're going to find a hatchback that fits all three plus has enough room to carry all their crap in the back.

I have a Prius.  It could fit everything for a weekend trip,

  • What about a crossover type of vehicle where it's pretty much an SUV on a car frame? I like the Mazda crossover (CX-9?? I think?), I also like the Toyota Venza a lot. I almost bought one of those when I got my Camry.

  • The crossovers don't get as good as gas milage. I want something that is good on gas. The Venza is pretty expensive.
  • I drove a mazda 5 for a week because the dealership accidentally wreaked my van.  Long story.  Anyway, it was tiny. We got my stroller in there, but nothing else would have fit (with the 3rd row folded down).  The kids could also hit each o

  • Honda Accord. A hatchback won't have the room that you will need

  • I do love the Honda Accords & Nissan Altimas. They both get great gas milage & I'm used to driving a similar sized sedan. I was just wondering if a hatchback would give me more room. Plus the dog could ride in the back. I can't exactly put the

  • I have a two-year-old (still RF), a five-month-old, and two Labs and I drive a Toyota Matrix.  I have no problems driving it and fitting everyone (the dogs are a little cramped, but fit tethered in the cargo area), but it's a squeeze for my DH, wh

  • Honestly, it's really hard to fit 2 kids, a dog and all of your crap in a hatchback. We got one last summer, and weren't expecting to add a dog to our family, so we traded in and got a Ford Edge. IMO it just makes everything easier to have an SUV when you

  • I have a Subaru Outback, and while the mpg isn't great, it isn't horrible either. It's much better than a full sized SUV. I kind of feel like there are no great options for a vehicle with great fuel economy when you have 2 kids and a dog. We did look at a

  • We have a Mazda 3 (not hatchback though) and we could fit 1 rf and 1 ff cars eats (only have one though - but two is possible as long as the rf is behind the passenger). It's not ideal though for long distances because there isn't a ton of leg room for po

  • Personally, we have the Mitsubishi Outlander and it's only a 4 cylinder, we get really great gas mileage. I don't know what I'd do with less room

  • My best friend has a mazda 3 and it has pleanty of room. Hers is a hatchback as well. I think for a car it has a generous amount of space.

  • Thanks ladies! I'm going to have to test drive a few different cars and take the car seat with me to make sure it can fit RR & FF, while leaving DS at home with DH of course  :)  You have given me some options I didn't think of before. Thank
  • My husband is looking into the mazda CX-7.  It seems to beat out all the other vehicles in its category for mileage!

  • Subaru Forester. I get avg 25 mpg, smaller than the Outback but less expensive. I bought brand new and the price was amazing compared to some of the small SUV's. The 2014 models get 30+ mpg.
