I am going to give my daughter her very first taste of food tonight. she is 4 months 2 weeks old. did you start with rice cereal or oatmeal? I have bothbut my friends tell me to skip the rice and go right for the oat meal. any thoughts?
I'm debating this as well. I'm thinking of doing oatmeal because I have heard some mothers say their baby liked it more and I have heard rice is now known to have high levels of arsenic in it. Although I'm not sure what kind of health risk arsenic has, I was fed rice cereal as a baby and as far as I know I'm healthy, but I feel it's better be safe than sorry. Anyway, if your at all curious here's a link.
I was given both at my shower as a part of a gift. This past week we decided to give it a try, since we had it. We gave her rice first and she kept spitting it out. She did this every time with the rice cereal. We figured it was because she was still figuring everything out. A few nights later we gave her the oatmeal and we were both amazed when she actually kept it in her mouth and swallowed it her first bite. She likes the oatmeal much better.
I've been giving my LO oatmeal and he loved it right from the beginning. I never tried the rice cereal, it makes me nervous with the arsenic. There is always the barley cereal too.
It's best to avoid arsenic no matter how small the amount might be. There is no point to rice cereal and usually constipates babies. There is also no rush to start solids just yet becuase they serve no purpose except for practice. Lots of people just go straight for baby food and skip cereals but if you're set on cereal, I'd do oatmeal.
Ditto - I think I might just go right to food this time.
We skipped rice and went straight to oatmeal and she loves it! It's only been a few days, but so far so good. There isn't a big difference between the two, but I read a handful of stories that babies had problems with constipation on rice, so why risk my LO being uncomfortable?
