How much to pay a babysitter

I found this interesting

https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/06/how-much-to-pay-a-babysitter_n_2822514.html?ref=topbar

especially since we are hiring our first babysitter next week! (SIL has done it up to now....)

the going rate here seems to be $20-$25 an hour

which honestly I think is quite high, especially considering we are only hiring someone to come and sit and watch tv while dd sleeps

but anyhow, I just have accepted that's the norm here

what the babysitting rate where you live?

Re: How much to pay a babysitter

  • When we were looking, the going rate seemed $25-30. Youch!   Seriously I used to get $2/hr and thought that rocked. Needless to say we don't go out much. We got rid of the nanny bc she asked for more money that I make per hr.

Anywho... I now use one of the daycare teachers and pay her $20 although she usually balks and wants less.

  • The girl from our daycare said on a Friday night not peak like weekends and cause G was sleeping shed give us a reduced rate..... Only 20 an hour.... Ouch !

I am hearing it's about 8 to 10 Euros here in Germany, but we haven't used a babysitter yet.

We've only used a babysitter once, and she was very flexible - didn't really have set rates. I offered her 20? for 3 hours while DD slept and she was fine with it. Since our nanny gets 8.50? / hr for DD1 and will get 11? / hr total for DD1 and DD2 when we start using her for both kids, I can't imagine paying a babysitter more than that, especially if the kids are sleeping.

  • If $20-$25/hr. is the going rate, then we are never getting a babysitter in!  I think I used to get $5-$10/hr. in the late '90s.

I would have a problem paying someone the equivalent (if worked out to a yearly salary based on an hourly wage) of $50,000+ to babysit my kid(s).  Not to devalue anyone in the field of childcare, but that's equivalent to what employees at a small engineering firm might make.

In Dublin (Ireland) the going rate is ?10 an hour.  Crazy!  I used to babysit when I was in school and got ?1.50 an hour and though it was great... though that was late 80s/early 90s!

  • Well we paid the girl across the street 15 an hour last night and age was thrilled. I can live with that :

What's minimum wage in Oz? Honestly, unless my kids are a handful or there are 5 of them, I'd probably pay a bit above min wage. There is no official min wage in Germany (yet), so that's hard to do here.

  • Minimum wage is 16 an hour, so we figured just under was ok cause it was cash : especially since dd was sleeping the whole time !
