Ikea Expedit shelves

Has anyone known of a toddler to climb or pull the Ikea Expedit shelves down on themselves? It seems like a sturdy piece to me, if assembled correctly and weighted with books at the bottom, but my husband, and a friend, have raised concerns about my plan to use this as a room divider to create a nursery and have shelves for baby books, toys etc. Appreciate your experienced thoughts to dispel or affirm their worries!

Re: Ikea Expedit shelves

  • Sigh, I figured they were probably right. I wonder if there's anything I can reasonably, safely use as a room divider? And then how to work in some baby shelves. My whole nursery plan blown to bits thanks to sharper minds than my own! :

  • Yes, IKEA includes anchoring brackets to secure the furniture to the wall, which you should do with a toddler.  The piece itself is hollow MDF, so it does not have as much solidity to it as you would think based on the size and needs to be secured.  Other than that, it would do well as a room divider.

  • We have the long one--I think it is 2x5 squares.  We have it in DD's room the short way so it is not very top heavy.  No issues.  But when we move furniture around to prepare for this LO next month, we are anchoring everything to the wall--whether is seems sturdy enough or not.

  • I have the 2 by 4 expedit. It is laid down horizontally, so it is only 2 high, but 4 long. We use it to store toys and do not have it anchored to the wall.
  • I think it's a great idea, except that it really needs to be anchored. :(  Could you hang something like a fun curtain from the ceiling as a room divider?  That way you could move it to the side and hook it if you wanted it open?  Just trying to think of something that's still airy....

  • You can use a metal L- bracket to anchor it to the floor on either end, so it can't be tipped. If course you'll have to out screws into your floor and you won't be able to move it.

  • Just want to add to pp that posted about anchoring furniture... When ds was small I.anchored everything as he.was a climber and I.was afraid he would pull it on himself. Well we moved last year and i bought him new bedroom furniture. I figured at 7 he was old enough not to have to worry about it. I was wrong and while.playing with his cousin a couple months ago he pulled a heavy bookcase completely loaded with books over on himself and could not get out by himself. Luckily he didn't get hurt but he could have very easily. I now anchor everything and will continue till my kids are much much older.
