Running and TTC

Hi ladies,

I just went off the pill at the end of January. DH and I are taking NFP classes and learning how to chart. We plan on TTC this summer. I've been a runner since middle school, and right now I run about 20 mpw. I'm not training for anything - just jogging around the neighborhood with our dog or running on the treadmill when the weather is nasty. I'm not running hard - just enough to enjoy it. :)

I love running. It's the best stress reliever on earth. I'm paranoid though that running will make ttc more difficult. I'm wondering if any of you have insight into how much is generally ok while ttc. 20 mpw doesn't feel like a lot to me. I'm taking two rest days every week, and am at a healthy weight (5'4" 120lbs). There is a link to my current chart in my signature. Does everything look good?

Thanks!!

Re: Running and TTC

  • Here's my story :)

29 cycles, 2 losses, 10 treatment cycles (including 3 IVF's) to conceive #1 - took it easy every single 2WW and didn't even workout during IVF.

Took 4 cycles to conceive # 2 (on our own) and I worked out through the 2WW not thinking we would get pg.

I say keep running and PS jealous of your weight ; )  Also, GL to you!

  • I didn't have a problem -- I was training for a marathon when I got pregnant with my first and ended up running a marathon at 8 weeks.  I ran my entire pregnancy (past 41 weeks because I was overdue) and PR'd some 5Ks after the first baby.  I kept running with my second baby now and ran that entire pregnancy, too.  I love running so much and was able to have babies 2 years apart and keep running almost the entire time.  I'm at a healthy BMI just like you.

  • That is about what I was doing when TTC (took us just 3 months). Once you start temping, you can confirm O and if you're not O-ing, you might consider dropping mileage down to see if it helps.

Similar story - without the second baby or PRs!  I was training for a half when I got pregnant with my son and ran the half while pregnant.   Continued running throughout my pregnancy - I think I eventually dropped down to 14/15 miles per week because I just got too slow to keep up my usual mileage in the time I had before work (morning runner).

  • I have a post about our TTC journey on my blog, from Aug or Sept? For me running and weight loss did seem to make a difference, but I'll never know for sure. It took us 7 months to conceive number 2. If you've been doing this a while and at your current weight for a while, or if your cycle is regular, it shouldnt be a problem.
  • I was training for a half marathon right before we conceived DD, so i was running more miles than i ever had before. No problems here!
  • I ran a half marathon either the day we concieved or two days after conception.  I know this for fact, because I was sore for about a week after, so bedroom activity was lacking and my BFP came a week after that.  DD was born healthy 4 hours before her due date.

When I had the two early miscarriages, I did everything "right" and had zero caffine and no working out.

With this pregnancy I'm still running 4 miles 3 times a week - running may be a stretch, since it's more like a slow jog.

    BFP #1 - 2/5/2010 - c/p 2/9/2010, BFP #2 - 6/20/2010 - DD Born 2/26/2011, BFP #3 - 9/13/2012 - c/p 9/20/2012, BFP #4 - 11/11/2012 - betas: 53 on 11/13, 115 on 11/15, 8069 on 11/26 - u/s shows 127 bpm! Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker BabyFruit Ticker
  • We have been ttc for over a year now.  I conceived naturally a year ago right after a half marathon.  I continued to work out, but lost the pregnancy at 9 weeks.  I currently work out pretty intense, teach cardio combat, take martial arts and run 5 days a week.  I have had 6 failed cycles all while working out but "slowing down". This IVF I am told not to teach, run, or overheat...It is very difficult for me. I did read a study that stated 7 hours or less per week while trying to conceive. I think it is very personal but I was also told as long as I won't feel gulty if the pregnancies do not take.
  • Depends on the person.  I was a dancer for 17 years and took up distance running after college.  Periods had stopped in high school.  5'9" and 110, naturally lean figure/small bones.  I cut myself down to 3 mi/day 4x/week and did other less strenuous workouts (weights, yoga, cycling) other days when we got married and TTC.  I knew I'd have a problem.  As soon as I went to the RE after 2 cycles of Clomid wiht my RE, she made me stop running, period.  Basically what happened with me is my body was trying to support my workouts and didn't want to reproduce anything.  Progesterone production was nill and a brain MRI showed no lesions.  I continued with the elliptical and light weights and when I got to IVF, it worked so quickly and well.  Post-preg getting back into things was s cinch...23 lbs dropped off in 4 weeks and core is as strong as ever.  Went back to running 3mi at a time 4 wks after and no problem.  Will stop again a couple days ahead of 4.10.13 FET.  It worked for me...
March 2011: Off Nuva, cycle back to "normal" for me: No periods since 15 years old. June 2011:Provera&50 mg Clomid; Progesterone:0.7 July 2011:Provera&100mg Clomid; Progesterone:3.29 Met with RE:No Clomid response, begin injectables Sep 5 mg Letrozole and Ovidrel in the interim month. Cut out running (was a distance-runner), cycling, eliptical. Restricted to weight-training, walking, pilates. Brain MRI normal. Being physically over-stressed is the reason the body stopped producing prog. Late Sep 2011: Menopur, Ovidrel,& IUI (10.10.11):BFN-Great injectable response: 2 mature, 6 near mature, many smaller; Problem: 9 cysts! Dr: IUI too uncontrolled for number of viable eggs & age. On to IVF! IVF ER 12.6: 37 mature eggs, 27 fertilized, froze all to avoid overstimulation; FET 1.22 (2 Grade 1)=BFN; FET 2.22 (3 Grade 2)=BFP! Beta 10dp3dt=291; 12dp3dt=644; HB 3.26!! 174 bpm: Vanishing twin almost completely absorbed 10wks Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • It depends for each person, but running didn't cause any problems for me. I was training for a fall marathon running about 40-50 miles per week when my DH and I found out we were expecting. I'm 5'8" and 130 lbs., in healthy weight range.

I finally figured out I was pregnant when I had to cut a 20 mile long run down to 5 miles and ran straight home... then cried for a bit. I was dizzy and the hormones were starting to kick in :)
