Let's talk nipple care...

I don't think this has been discussed recently! If it has been, then I'm apparently blind.

What are your favorites for nipple care while breastfeeding? I want to make sure I don't have to send poor DH running all over town trying to find some obscure product later or have to wait however many days in agony for something to arrive in the mail!

  • When I took the breastfeeding class before my DS was born the LC recommended putting a little breastmilk on your nipples right after the feeding and after a few minutes putting lanolin on.

  • I just used lanolin or breast milk and let them air dry.  I didn't have any bad problems with cracking or bleeding though.

  • I used lanolin. I preferred the Medela kind.

  • Lanolin right after each feeding was the best!

  • I had major problems with cracking and bleeding and the only thing that worked for me was using breastmilk and air drying as well as Motherlove Nipple Cream. Lanolin didn't do anything for me.

  • Change nursing pads frequently if you are leaking.  Therefore, you'll want to have a lot on hand.  Having your nipples sit in a wet pad is the quickest way for things to go downhill.  Keeping them dry between nursings will prevent cracking and raw skin.

  • I tried the medela nursing pads and medela lanolin and didn't care for either of them. I much preferred the lansinoh lanolin and the lansinoh nursing pads. My nipples were super sore for weeks and the lansinoh pads felt softer to me. The medela one crinkled up too much for my liking. Plus their lanolin felt too thin. I liked the thick feel of the lansinoh lanolin. I also tried to let both breast "air out" between feedings and I did also try rubbing breast milk on my nipples. The only thing that seemed to truly help was time. Everything else just made things slightly less uncomfortable until the pain totally went away about 6 or 7 weeks in for me.

Agreed. Also tried the silicon gel pads they gave me at the hospital but I hated themthey smelled like chemicals and didn't really help at all.

  • I had really cracked, bloody nipples with DS1.  I put Lanolin on them religiously after every feeding and a few weeks in I realized the Lanolin was actually preventing them from healing because they couldn't dry out at all.

What worked better was to soak them in some warm salt water and then let them air dry.  Once they healed a bit I would just let them air dry with expressed breast milk on them.

With DS2 I never had any problems and never did anything special to them.  I think they had toughened up by that point.

  • Lanolin or breast milk. I used breast milk on diaper rashes, eye gunk on baby, and some other stuff but I don't really remember. It's awesome. And I used my cousin's with her first on acne. It works.

I loved this stuff. I also lived the soothes gel pads. Lanolin was too goopy for me.
