Yogurt...

When did you start yogurt with your babies? We started a few weeks ago at 8.5 months actual, 6.5 months adjusted.  Our pediatrician is ok with it but when I just called the d/c that DS is going to be starting at the woman seemed surprised and said they don't give it until 1.  The woman I talked to IS NOT in with the infants... she's in the office but now I'm wondering if I started it too early. DS LOVES it and our pediatrician was ok with it so I'm assuming it is ok but was I wrong to start this early??

Re: Yogurt...

  • We started around lo on yogurt at around 6 months actual. That was when our pedi said we could start. We haven't had any issue with it. Although I do add a little cereal to it to give it a better texture for him. He loves it!!!

  • If your pedi was okay with it, then I wouldn't worry about it. Not sure what the daycare lady is concerned about exactly. I can think of a couple potential issues. The texture of yogurt should be fine if it smooth/puree. If it is mixed consistency (meaning the yogurt with chunks of fruit), then some children have difficulty handling mixed consistencies if their oral motor skills are not ready for solids. Also, some people choose not to give their children anything containing dairy until a year of age due to allergies or tummy issues. Beyond that, I can't think of any other reasons why the daycare lady would think it's too early. Some people just personally choose to wait a year to begin anything other than breast milk or formula, but that's your decision and not hers, obviously. But again, if your pedi agreed to it, your LO is doing well with it, and solids at his age is what you choose to be best, then I don't see a problem.

  • she said something about yeast???

They provide food but DS will only eat purees mixed with yogurt so I'll have to send it with him.  One thing I like about it is the extra calories... he's a good weight but could stand to gain a few pounds... haha I wish I had that problem! I'm just going to keep on keeping on. THANK YOU!

I have no idea what she is talking about tbh, I worked in the infant room at a daycare all through college and we fed babies yogurt all the time. Like pp said if ped is ok with it than no worries. Also we started dd at the same time, if not a little earlier, fwiw.
