Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Terrified of Choking

As we enter the stage of feeding LO real food...is anyone else terrified of LO choking?  I'm afraid of giving him anything besides purees!  I finally gave him some puffs and watch him like a HAWK as he eats them.  I'm afraid to give him anything else.  I would love to put things on his tray for him to pick up and feed himself. Any ideas on things i can give him and reassurances that he will not choke on them?  FYI he's 7 months.

Re: Terrified of Choking

  • My LO choked on a cookie and every since them I am terrified. I break the little puff stars into 3 pieces which are small enough. There are also homemade cookies that just melt in their mouth

  • My LO eats puffs pretty well but last week I was feeding him mashed banana and he choked on it and then threw up and I felt terrible.  I've been scared to give him anything but purees since then.  I did give him a little piece of pancake on Sunday though and he handled that just fine.  I think the key is just to keep trying.

  • I know it can be scary....but it is important to understand the difference between gaging and choking.  Babies who are learning to feed themselves will gag quite a bit because they are learning how to move food around their motuh. I would say that at least once a day DD will over stuff her mouth, or misgage something and she starts to gag/cough. She has never actually choked on anything I have given her.

I'm glad you posted this, I have been thinking LO has been choking a few times, but after reading this I think he was just gagging.

Still scares the crap out of me though! I try not to panic because he can probably sense that, but in my mind I'm freaking out thinking he's going to die!

This!!  I'm actually not afraid.  I know it's going to happen from time to time, but I'm always right there. Last night he gagged pretty badly on a puff that he puked because of it.  That hasn't happened before.  I give him things that dissolve quickly, so maybe that's why I'm not as worried.  Puffs and cheerios and yogurt drops dissovle well.

I also give him pea sized pieces of other foods like: Peas, cooked carrots, cooked apples, avacado, pears, ground beef, pancakes, scrambled eggs, cheese...etc.

  • Something to remember: babies have their gag reflex in the center of their mouth to actually prevent them from choking!

The sooner you start with real food [over 6 months, of course], the quicker they learn NOT to gag themselves.
