Babies: 3 - 6 Months

moms with 2+ children please come in

My 4 mo old is experiencing the 'wakeful period', which I hear is completely normal.  I'm wondering how long this wakeful period usually lasts?  My LO has been STTN for a while, but over the past two weeks is waking anywhere between 2-6 times.

Also, we are still swaddling with arms in.  At what point did you switch to arms out?  Was it a tough transition for your LO?  I know that when babies can turn over you want arms out, but is there anything else I should look for to determine if we should stop swaddling with arms in soon?

  • DS2 went through the 4 mo. wakeful too and it lasted maybe two weeks I think. It was exhausting but it seemed to go by kind of quickly.

We just stopped sawddling Saturday night. He kept breaking out of it so I knew it was time. He woke up once that first night and I just put his bink back in and he fell right back to sleep. Last night he slept 8:45 - 4 which is a little longer than he slept swaddled so I was happy.

    Good Luck!

  • DD2 has never been a good night time sleeper but her wakings definitely increased just before she turned 4 months old so Im guessing that was due to the wakeful period. She was a hot mess for a solid month and now shes getting back to a mangable 2 time a night nursing pattern. We also did sleep training a couple weeks ago so I dont know if that helped or if she naturally was coming out of that tough sleeping period. Im guessing youre in for 2-4 weeks of sleep deprivation!

No advice on swaddling, neither of my girls liked it much.

  • Neither of my kids really did a noticable 4 month wakeful thing.  DS just kinda woke up earlier than normal and woke up pissed at the world.  Now he's back to waking about 7-7:15-ish.  And he's happy when he wakes up!

We stopped swaddling right before 3 months.  The first 2 nights sucked, but after that he learned how to do it.  Now he sleeps really well with the sleep sack.  He's also been sleeping better now that he can roll on his side.  He's definitely a side sleeper!  He made a lot of noise when we transitioned to his crib from our room, from swaddle to sleep sack, and DD just learned to sleep through it.  And she's a light sleeper.  Kids just learn.  Good luck!
