Helmet? On tricycle?

How many of you LO's wear a helmet while on their tricycle or motorized jeep, etc? My grandparents bought my DD one, but usually, like today for instance - she was on her tricycle and I was walking literally right beside her. I'm just not sure what the norm is - I mean I felt she was safe as was, she only goes about .23 miles per hour lol. :) Now a bike is a totally different story, she will definitely have a helmet on then.

Re: Helmet? On tricycle?

  • Yes for sure on a trike but mostly so he learns early on that helmets are non-negotiable for bikes. I probably wouldn't care for a motorized car.

  • Yes, DD always wears a helmet when on her tricycle.  She has fallen off it before - steered into our neighbor's lawn and tipped over the side.  She didn't hit her head, but it's a good safety precaution and habit to get into.
  • A wears a helmet every time he uses his balance bike. I want him to get in the habit of always wearing a helmet when he's on a bike.

  • Yes, it reinforces the need to wear a helmet while riding on things.  DD wears hers while riding on her power quad, her tricycle, while rollerskating, and while using her Step 2 extreme coaster.

  • DD wears a helmet when ever she rides her bike or is in the trailer behind our bike. Its not something that I am willing to waver on, at all, and she knows it.  She will also call us out if we grab her bike and put it on the driveway and not her helmet.

That being said, she does ride her balance bike in the house with out her helmet, but that's more so because she gets on and off if 7,000 times a day, and that would just get annoying over time.

I never gave a scooter or motorized ride on toy a thought, but when she does get her scooter she'll have to wear her helmet.

  • Yes, DD1 wears a helmet when she rides her tricycle. Like the others, the earlier she gets into the habit, the better.

  • Yes on both. He also has to wear it when he's in the burley bee too.
  • Thanks ladies. You all are right - helmet it is. :))

  • DS always wears his helmet on his bike, more for habit building than anything. He got a power wheels jeep for Christmas and even though it goes fast, I have to speed walk to keep up, he never wears a helmet. If he rides a power quad though, then he does wear a helmet.

  • We don't put a helmet on for the trike.
  • Yup. Trike, scooter or anything else that move or he could fall from, he wears a helmet.

  • Helmet on, every single time.  He knows he can't ride the tricycle without the helmet.  I'm not really concerned about the safety issue, the idea is to make it a habit.  When he gets a big kid bike, there isn't going to be any argument about whether or not he needs a helmet.

  • We always use a helmet on his tricycle.  He's managed to flip it over many times as well so I feel like a helmet is very important.  I never knew a tricycle could flip so easily, but it does.
It took 3 1/2 long years, but we finally got our little miracle!
