Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Traveling internationally

I'm traveling with my 1 y/o son in a couple of months and am wondering if we should get him a seat on the plane or use their bassinet that hangs on the wall.  Does anyone have experience with the bassinet?  My son is 20lbs and 30" and I thought he'd be too big but he meets the measurements for the bassinet, although is almost too tall for it.  Anyway, I'd not sure which way he'd be more comfortable.  The flight is 10hrs and it's $1450 for a seat vs $160 for a bassinet, but if he's going to be squished in that thing it's not worth saving the money.  TIA!

Re: Traveling internationally

  • I would get him his own seat and plan to take the car seat on the plane with me.  We did quite a bit of international travel with DS1 when he was a baby (6m-18m) and even at 8m, they said he was too big for the bassinet and would not give us one.  He didn't hit 20lbs until he was a year so he was smaller than your LO.  You could try calling the airline and asking about the weight limits but from what I gathered through our traveling, it was at the discretion of the flight attendants.

I know that my kids would do much better in their own seats that they're used to riding in/sleeping in rather than placing them in something that is essentially a new, exciting thing to explore.  Safe travels!

  • Eh we never pay for seats when our kids are under 2.  We just hold them in our laps.
  • We' ve done several flights back and forth to visit family starting when DS was 6 weeks old and we've done it both ways.. DS didn't like the baby seat or his carseat at all. He was a little freaked out I think and always ended up in my lap. I personally would take advantage of his age and fly free/cheap for as long as possible. Save your money to do something a little extra on your trip :)

My six month old has been on 9 international flights, including Ireland and the one way ticket for her cost $1800.00.  To me safety is not a price I will put on my daughters.  My kids have never been, nor will ever be lap kids on the plane.  It is extremely dangerous for the baby, you and other passengers.  If you are checking your car seat you should consider it crashed since you don't know how baggage handlers are handling the car seat.  I have seen many times baggage and car seats getting chucked around by baggage handlers.  Take this into consideration when booking tickets.  I would also look at car-seat.org.  They have a travel section.
