Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Making baby's food

Sorry if this is posted a lot...

If you make your baby's food, do you use a special processor (one that steams, purees, defrosts, and heats up the baby food)? Like the Baby Bullet?

I have read bad reviews on all of them, saying they grow mold quickly, and it's impossible to clean it out. Just wondering if anyone has had their processor for a long while now (so I guess this may be geared toward second+ time moms) and not had a problem with mold, and which one you use.

Thanks!

Re: Making baby's food

  • I used a steamer basket in a pot then I would either put it in the food processor or use and immersion blender. The little extra machines are a waste if you already have a food processor or blender.

  • I made all of DD1 baby food.

I used kitchen equipment I already had because I didn't feel like the equipment geared towards baby food was big enough for the batch sizes I wanted to make.

For foods like apples, peas, pears, carrots etc. I would steam them on my regular steam basket in a pot on the stove then dump in blender. Added a little water to things like peas as needed.

Something like butternut squash or sweet potatoes got roasted in the oven then tossed in the blender.

Then I scooped the pure into ice cube trays and froze them. Once frozen I popped them out into gallon freezer bags labeled and returned to freezer.

Then when I needed food I just grabbed a few cubes and thawed.

As baby gets older you can grab a mixture of cubes to make combos too.

It was really easy and I plan to do it for DD2.
  • I also steam and then use a blender that we already had.  It has 6 settings, but I usually use the smoothie setting to make his purees, and he loves it!  Making food at home is so much cheaper, and I love knowing what I'm actually feeding my baby (since I made it)! :)
  • I boil most of her food and puree it in my food processor.  Easy peasy.

I store it in these https://www.amazon.com/Fresh-Baby-Easy-Breast-Trays/dp/B0007CS4EU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1361884696&sr=8-2&keywords=baby+food+storage

    good luck!

  • For you ladies who make your own food do you give your kids processed food too like Gerber? I'm curious because I want to make food at home but we will probably still buy it sometimes. With DS, we tried making some food but he didn't really care for it. He preferred the store bought stuff. And he was by no means a picky baby, but he just wasn't impressed with what we made. I'm thinking maybe this time we will give him homeade food first and see if that works, but I was just curious about your experiences.

When she was a baby I made all of her food except for when we went on vacation. Then I bought the Ella/Plum type pouches to feed her.

Ironically at 2 1/2 years old she eats more store bought baby food then she did as a baby because I still buy her those pouches and she loves them!
  • I used the Baeba Babycook with DS and absolutely loved it!  It's sitting in a cupboard currently and I look forward to using it again with #2.  It steams and purees and I didn't find it tough to clean at all.

  • I have two containers of gerber food in my cabinet in case we need "emergency" foods.  Other than that, I make my own.  I also buy organic where it counts (i.e. the dirty dozen).

True dat!  It makes bigger batches than the Magic Bullet or Beaba too.

Plus I made all the food for DD (and plan to for DS too) except prunes and applesauce.  Buying unsweetened, natural applesauce was just too easy and I didn't want to deal with prunes, but it helped when DD was constipated.

No. I refused to buy jars of crap. It's nasty. If I won't eat it then I won't give it to the baby. The only exceptions were puffs and yogurt, but I still bought organic and less processed on those.

The bolded part is my biggest reasoning for making DS's food.

  • I was gifted a baby bullet. It doesn't steam your food, it is just a little blender. I haven't had any problems with mold and it is easy to clean. But you don't need a special baby food maker.

  • I made lots of DD's food (big batches in my full-size equipment...steam, then puree or blend, or whatever her stage at the time) but still gave her jar/pouch food too.  If a fruit or veggie was out of season it was nice to have the option of buying it already prepared.  Making it at home allowed us to create custom blends, which was fun.  Jars and pouches were great for traveling or running errands as it doesn't require refrigeration.  At almost 2 she still LOVES the pouches...I wish there were a way to wash and refill them.
