Experience with ParaGard?

I'm looking into getting this.  We were originally just going to use NFP, but I'm just really, really not wanting another child anytime soon.  I BF, but he is on solids now, and do pump while I'm at work part-time, so I can no longer trust BF as an effective BC.  I'd love to hear some of your experiences with it!

Re: Experience with ParaGard?

  • I tried the Paragard once I realized I hated the side effects of BCP.  Honestly, I hated it.  My bleeding was extreme, which is a side effect.  I also had cramps that would rival contractions, also a side effect.  Both of these they say will decrease with time but it really depends on each woman and her response to it.

I asked to have it removed b/c I hated it so much.  When they went to remove it they couldn't find it.  A whole day's worth of tests, ultrasounds, blood test for pregnancy, a few x-rays all to make sure it had not lodged somewhere in my abdomen.  So much for reliable birth control.  It fell out on its own (most liely with the heavy bleeding) and I did not feel it come out.

Some women really like the Mirena, but I chose not to get that due to the hormones that I was trying to get away from in the first place.

I use NFP and REALLY don't want another baby right now either.  If you are self taught with TCOYF I would encourage you to seek out an actual class or individual instruction so you feel more confident in NFP.  There are SO many methods of NFP to chose from.  I personally use the Creighton Method (which is individual instruction only).  For a list of other methods, this website has the most comprehensive list I have seen.  (please don't let the Catholic website scare you, they are just there for information with links to each of the methods).

  • I wouldn't use nfp...but, I say this because before DD2 we were doing this method for a few months. It worked great, but then I had that one cycle where I ovulated about a week early and I ended up pregnant. Unless you are open to another pregnancy, I would find a different method. Oh, and FWIW, we had taken NFP classes.

  • I have had paragard for about 4 months now, before my periods were 2 months apart, bled a tiny bit the 1st two days a lot the 3&4th and a little for 3 or 4 more days. I had some cramping but nothing i couldnt deal with.

Now, i spot randomly between periods, have one every month. bleed lightly for one day then heavy for 3-4 days, and when i say heavy i mean it. then light bleeding for 1 or days. But the cramps are HORRIBLE for 1~2 days. I feel like im in labor again, or just generally want to roll over and cry. But this is coming from someone who hates taking any type of pain meds, so i pop one tylenol and its tolerable after that.

  • I haven't had a period yet, but I've had the paragard since about 12 weeks pp.  So far, I'm happy enough.  I had a Mirena after my daughter, but felt like it killed my bm supply, so I opted for the paragard this time.  I am also not interested in another child anytime soon, if at all.

After K weans, if the Paragard is awful, I won't hesitate get a Mirena.

  • I had ParaGard after my daughter was born, had it removed to get pregnant with my son and now have it again.  I honestly love it.  My periods are slightly heavier than when I was on the pill, but nothing horrible.  Usually only heavy for 2-3 days and then tapers off.  The cramping is a little worse than when I was on BCP but again, nothing like labor cramping AT all.  I like the fact that I don't have to have any extra hormones in my body after being on BCP for 10 years before my daughter was conceived.

  • My periods are heavier, as in I have to wear a super and a pad overnight.  I think my periods are more cramp prone too.  Sometimes DH can feel the strings.

I like hte non hormonal option though, so that's what I went with.

In the past I used Depo - loved it.  Just can't use it for long term use.

Nuvaring - Loved the idea of it.  I have a pretty strong hunch that it gave me a large cyst though.  (large enough that I had my ovary removed)
