19 months & head banging?

DS has begun a bit of a tantrum phase and sometimes when he doesn't get his way and he throws a tantrum, he'll bang his head on the floor a few times out of frustration. I get that. That's his way of expressing his anger/discontent.

But I put him down for a nap today (right after a tantrum) and he is taking a while to fall asleep which is fine, he's not crying or screaming, just laying there (I'm watching on the video monitor). But then I heard loud banging so I looked at the monitor and he was banging his head against the back of the crib!  This just seemed odd to me. Anyone experience anything like this?

Re: 19 months & head banging?

  • My Ds did this for awhile at this age. It is most likely an attention getter for him. Don't acknowledge him doing it. The less attention you pay to it, the less he'll do it. Trust me, he will not hurt himself.

It also could be a teething related issue. Sometimes banging their head takes away from the other pain.

It will pass. Ds doesn't go around banging his head anymore.

  • Also, this is pretty common behavior.
  • Thanks, Shanado! I was figuring it was probably in the realm of normal, but it always helps to hear others experiences.

  • Logan does this too when he is very upset and in full tantrum mode. We tend to move him to his bed so he can't hurt himself so bad.
