Baby Names

Is Rachel a total bore?

On one hand, I think it is a strong, classic and pretty name. On the other, it doesn't "excite" me. My DH and I agree on very few names and this is one of them so I'm trying really hard to make sure that I love it and am not just agreeing to it because DH actual likes it. Thoughts? Also what's up with the Rachel vs Rachael spelling?

  • I don't think it is boring at all. I think it is down to earth and pretty.

  • When acquaintances named their baby Rachelle (French version, as common as Rachel were I live), I discovered to my surprise that I really love that name, although according to some it may be overused. I'd go for it!

I think Rachael is the more Biblical correct/Hebrew version according to some, but I'm not sure.

I have the same problem, DH and I don't agree on many names. That is, I'm relieved we succeeded in finding one for each gender. He invariably shoots down the more special names that I suggest. Somehow, this process leads to coming up with more 'classical' and popular names.

Both of our names are in the lower half of the top 100 were we live, and this is slightly more popular than I'm comfortable with. I know our choices are 'safe' choices that won't blow anyone of their feet. But I think that is almost inevitable when you have such different tastes.

  • I love Rachel, it was in our top 5 for DD.

I like both spellings but Rachel is correct in Hebrew, the extra "h" changes the pronounciation.

This is so true for us too.  We have two boys that were much easier to name.  We have never agreed on a girl's name.

  • I like it a lot and don't think it's a "bore". It's pretty and classic, as you say. I kind of wish it had a better nn option than just "Rach" which I often hear IRL.

Both spelling are fine to me, but I prefer Rachel. It's just easier and less likely to get misspelled or questioned.

  • I love the name. Sadly it's my SIL's name, so not an option otherwise I would have used it. I like Rachel spelling over Rachael. Personal preference though.

This.  And I prefer the Rachel spelling.

  • I really like it, and I think it's a bonus that it's one of those historically popular names that has been trending downward in recent years, so it's familiar but kind of refreshing at the same time.  I think Rachael might be closer to the Hebrew spelling, but Rachel is much more common and would probably be easier to live with.

  • I don't really care for the name. I guess I knew to many people with this name growing up that it does feel boring to me. It is pretty but when I hear it I'm not like wow that's beautiful.
  • It's NMS, but wanted to comment on the spelling.  My boss spells it Rachael and most people find it so annoying.  She says she always has to correct people as well.

    I'd spell it Rachel.

This. I definitely grew up with a ton of Rachels, so it just isn't very interesting to me. It's not a bad name, but it is kind of boring. If I used it I would spell it Rachel, for sure.

  • I think Rachel is lovely.  Feminine w/o being girlie and cutesy.  Beautiful on a little girl and solid on a woman.

My college roommate was Rachael.  It took me a little while to get used to it, but now I prefer that spelling.

All this. I think because I knew SO MANY growing up it feels dated to me. I knew just as many Rachels as I knew Jennifers, Jessicas, etc.

My name is Rachel. I have never had an issue with it =)  As far as nick name, I really don't have one & perfectly fine with that, people just call me Rachel.
