Tongue Thrust

Hello! My daughter was born with a rare brain malformation and it has caused her to have severe tongue thrust. Shes 16 months and sees therapy but I really dont feel like its helping much. It seems to be getting worse. She used to be able to eat a jar or two of baby food and now i cant get 5 spoonfulls in her. Shes still primarily bottle fed although I offer her solids and snacks all day long. She can chew, but her tongue just pushes everything out. She does well with puffs but thats about it. Has anyone gone through this DX and has anything helped?? Right now therapy has given us a tool to stimulate her mouth and a flat bumpy spoon but I hadnt seen any improvement over the last several months. Thank you!

Re: Tongue Thrust

  • Lauren has Down syndrome and tongue thrust. It's hard because its so stinkin cute now, but I know it won't be when she's 12.

Right now we are able to just push her tongue in and say "tongue in!" We've heard that just touching it can remind them but Lauren just tries to lick us.

I'm not sure of any advice to give you, just wanted to tell you that you aren't alone!

  • Have you tried oral exercises to help pusher tongue back? Not while eating but you would work from the back sides of the tongue pushing and manipulating it almost to the tip.  Never touch the tip of the tongue because that is a tongue thrust trigger.  Basically just getting her to move her tongue all around her mouth.  It can help strengthen her ability to control her tongue and she could learn to overpower  the tongue thrust.

To my boys:  I will love you for you Not for what you have done or what you will become I will love you for you I will give you the love The love that you never knew
