Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Is LO ready for solids

At our 4 month appointment two weeks ago, the pedi said to start cereal twice a day.  I have tried rice cereal for the last three days and I am wondering if she is ready.  Most of it ends up on her clothes and she doesn't swallow it.  She also doesn't seem to want to open her mouth towards it.  I am also having a hard time with the bottle right now.  She doesn't seem to want that either.  Should I wait a bit longer? Or should I try oatmeal instead.

Re: Is LO ready for solids

  • No help here, but our pedi recommended starting cereal today too. I'm interested in seeing replies. I had planned on waiting until closer to 6 months, and skipping rice cereal altogether...

  • He told us to wait until 6 months for veggies and fruits but I am wondering if I should just wait.

  • I'm no expert but I'd put it off and try again in a few weeks. It sounds like she doesn't understand the mechanics yet. It's good to keep introducing her but maybe she's not ready for it to be a regular part of her day. Fwiw, we started cereal last week when DD was 5 months and she seemed totally uninterested and spit a lot out. After 2 or 3 days of trying it she now will eat a full serving with no issues.....takes some time with some babies.

  • I'd wait until at least sixth months, they don't technically "need" to eat solids until year. Everything before then in practice. Some babies don't like eating until they're a little older.

  • My pedi recommended same thing and I felt same way. We struggled with rice for three days. I was about to give up but decided to try the oatmeal. He completely got it. Still a little messy. Next couple of times I made it a little thicker. Good results. At the one week mark he was easily eating 2 teaspoons. Now at the two week mark he is devouring 4 teaspoons easily, not a stitch on his bib.

Im glad I didnt give up. I know it's practice but I think it's good for him to get used to spoon and consistency. She wants us to work up to two tablespoons by end of the month for his 5 month appt.

We'll add something new then. Fruits or veggies, I'm not sure.

  • We skipped rice cereal with both kids ... Actually I won't feed them anything I wouldn't eat and that stuff is nasty, lol. DS took a little while to get use to spoon feelings. DD has caught on right away and inhales apples, bananas, and peas so far.

This. She wasn't all that interested in rice, but when I tried sweet potatoes she devoured them! However it did take a week or so to get the hang of it, but now she leans towards the spoon, opens her mouth and is loving sweet potatoes, pears and squash. Bananas she surprisingly is not crazy about.

  • My LO loves his oatmeal, veggies, fruits...well anything you give him he just gobbles it up.  We looked for signs that he was ready:  good head control, sitting with support, interest in, and reaching for what we were eating.  It was all there about a week before his 4 mos. appointment.  So we started him on oatmeal.  The pedi wanted us to wait until 6 mos, but he seemed ready and really enjoyed it.  It can still get a little messy especially when we try a new food.  When it's something he has already had he doesn't spill a drop.  She may not be ready yet.  I agree with OP about trying again.  It's something new and may take a little time.

  • It sounds like she may not be ready yet. Which is perfectly fine.

I personally skipped rice cereal, my daughter is also 4 months,  but she opens right up for her veggies and fruits and eats most of the little tub. But that's one of the best ways of knowing if they are ready, they seem interested in whatever it is you are trying to give them.

Trust your gut momma.  :) You'll know when she's ready.
