XP: Tell me about your IUD placement experience

Coming over from 0-3 to ask for some more mamas to weigh in.  Thought some ladies here might have some insight to share :)

I'm scheduled to have Paragard placed tomorrow.  I'm skerrred (about the placement and about how I'll like the IUD).

Tell me about your experience?  Bonus points for telling me there's nothing to be worried about and I won't feel a thing and I'll love it and it'll be the best thing ever!

Re: XP: Tell me about your IUD placement experience

  • I let my anxiety get the best of me and was freaking the eff out. It was not bad at all. The dr. told me I would feel a painful pinch but I didn't. The thing that clicks open hurt the most. LOL

  • I desperatly want Mirena but after a failed IUD placement 6 years ago, I don't think he is going to go for it.  Unfortunately, my first experience with an IUD didn't go well and I ended up in the hospital for two weeks becuase the thing caused an abscess and it burst.  Sorry, I didn't have more positive things to tell you.

  • I got a paraguard in December and honestly it felt like one little pinch or cramp and that was it. I was shocked that it was already in when the dr was done. HoweverwarningI went back after 4 weeks and it had come out!! I didn't feel anything odd so I was shocked. DH did complain that he felt it but I told him he was a crazy babyoops! Thank goodness DH and I are so scared to get pregnant again that we were using condoms as well until I had the check up with the dr. I had another put in last month and again, just a pinch. I go back in a couple weeks for the check up so I hope this one stays put!!

  • I did not even feel it... honestly. My doctor said when you get it within 6 months or so of vaginal birth your cervix is still really soft so it's less uncomfortable. I got mine when DD was 9 weeks old. My friend's sister had a c-section and she said it hurt (not crying painful but it hurt).

  • It wasn't bad at all, really quick in and out, and a little cramping afterwords. Although, I had NO idea that you could bleed for up to 6 months after placement (not sure if that's with Paragard too, I got Mirena), so I been bleeding pretty consistently for 19 days and counting. Boooo. I was told to let my OB know if DH or I felt the wires during coitus at the 4 week insertion check up, but I haven't felt them.

I've been bleeding since January 18th!!! It stopped for 2 days then came back a few weeks ago. The first month was like a period and since then it's been lighter but it's still super annoying. I'm so over it!!!

  • I had mine put in at the 6 week postpartum checkup.  I didn't find it any worse than having a pap.  I've had very light spotting off an on, but really no bleeding to speak of.

The only issue I have is that I think the strings were left a little too long and DH gets poked by them in some positions during sex.  I could go in and have them trimmed, I just am in no hurry to get back in the stirrups.

  • Not a big deal mostly like a pap smear.  Make sure you go to the bathroom first - the made me to check for pg before they inserted.  WHen I went to get mine checked there was a long wait and I need to go so that was uncomfortable but not painful.

  • I had the Mirena put in on Jan 15 and it was VERY crampy for me. I had a c-section in October and then a LEEP procedure so I couldn't get it untl the mid of Jan. I cramped on and off for the first month and spotted for a while. My period came the next month and it lasted like 4 days longer than my normal period but it was light compared to what it normally is. I still spot occasionally and I cramp once in a while. So my experience was that the first month was uncomfortable for the most part, but past that I'm good with it. I'm horrible at remembering to take a pill so I needed to get an IUD!

  • I did take an Advil prior to placement and didn't mind it at all. Kinda reminded me of a pap. Didn't have much for cramps afterwards either.

  • I took advil ahead of time. It was mostly uncomfortable, similar to a pap. Just had some cramping for a little afterwards. I have been spotting on and off since then (Mirena was inserted a month ago), which is normal. You can bleed for several months.
