Reflux

Anyone lo's dealing with reflux? Our lo was diagnosed with reflux last week. I had suspected it for a couple weeks. He started having a harder and harder time eating and would gag and then swallow and whine. It got so bad he was crying because he was hungry but would scream in pain after a couple sips both on the breast and bottle. It was horrifying! So he's been on Zantac for a week and I dont think it is really working. It has helped some but not completely. He also had another screaming feeding episode last night. Curious what meds your lo is taking and what formula if they are FF.

Re: Reflux

  • DD has reflux too, but I can't offer you much help. Nothing has worked for us so far. We've changed formula something like 6 times, and tried zantac. Different formulas gave her different problems, even when it helped her reflux, for example AR constipated her.

DS has pretty bad reflux too. He was taking Zantac but it didn't do much for him.  Now he is taking Prevacid which is a dissolvable pill that we give half in the morning and half in the afternoon.  We have to dissolve it in a little water and finger feed it to him.  The GI doctor said that would take at least two weeks to kick in so she also put him on Pepcid to help while the Prevacid kicked in.  He seems to be doing a lot better with this combination.   He screams much less after eating.  He still screams sometimes but it will be for 5 minutes versus the half hour to hour of screaming he was doing before.  I am afraid to wean him of off the Pepcid now since he is doing better; I don't want it to go back to how it was before.  He was in so much pain.  He takes similac alimentum formula, but that is because he also has milk soy protein intolerance.

  • We're currently dealing with silent reflux, it's a pain. He was actually throwing up more when we were giving him the zantac. We've been on a 10mg pill of omeprazole dissolved into 4mg of water once a day since Thursday. It has been working but now he's constipated, uhg! Tongue Tied He is formula fed though. Tried a few different formulas, he's been doing awesome with similac sensitive. We hated the emfamil ar, he was throwing up huge pea to dime sized curdled chunks of milk after feedings. So gross...

  • My DD2 has severe reflux. Zantac is crap, I'm convinced it made her worse. She's now on 2mL of Prilosec (compounded into liquid at the pharmacy) 2x a day. I have found she needs it at least 30min before she eats and it took about 10 days to work. She is EBF and I went dairy/soy free but it didn't make a difference so now I'm working that back in. Reflux sucks :(

oh and my pedi GI said that its like riding a roller coaster with reflux babies. You will have good and bad days, so on a bad day don't go crazy trying to figure out what you did or ate that was "wrong". It's just the nature of the beast

  • I can only add that tummy time helps.  Not when she's screaming...but if in advance we hold her on our chests, burp her, and give her regular floor tummy time, this helps.  Plus, if she's choking/clearing her throat a lot, we let her take a supervised nap on her tummy, and this always fixes this problem.

Reflux is really tough.  We started at week three with LO crying for 2 hrs during and after feeding, and me crying too!  Ped first said it was colic but I knew it wasn't....he was spitting up a lot as well.  As a FTM it is tough because you don't know what is normal!  We started on Zantac and Alimentum, and noticed a huge change...I think more due to Alimentum.  We just changed to Prevacid (generic) liquid compounded at a local independent pharmacy and think it is even better.  I think the Zantac worked for awhile but the spitting up got much worse.  Even our daycare thinks the Prevacid is working much better already, and it hasn't been a week yet.  We are in the 8 week wonder week so it's hard to separate what is helping, ha!  The Alimentum is expensive, but we noticed a huge change right away with that.
  • We have severe reflux here. DS is on omeprazole liquid and zantac. He was on just omeprazole to start, then we recently added the zantac and he's doing better. We still have to hold him upright for a good 30 mins after meals and he sleeps in the rock n play I'd love some advice for transitioning to the crib... He absolutelu hates it, even when it's on an incline!. He's also still
very fussy during/after some meals...hopefully he'll outgrow this.

We fortify my breastmilk to help him gain weight basisally mix it with formula. We were using good start gentle, but i just switched to similac sensitice and i think he's doing a bit better on thT.

What age do kids outgrow reflux?

  • DS was diagnosed with it right away because he would gulp really loud and then arch his back and hold his breath until his face got beet red.  He is up to 5 mg of Prilosec a day. It seems to be really helping him. We also had to put him on rice sooner to help with his digestion. As soon as the doc told us to put him on rice, we saw a completely different baby. He became so happy and wasn't in nearly as much pain.
