Medicaid

I am on Medicaid and my fianc and I would like to get married before the baby comes, however we do not want to lose the Medicaid because neither of us have good prenatal benefits at our jobs. it would cost us at least 12k. The question is; will we lose our benefits if we get married?

Re: Medicaid

  • I would think so but I would call Medicaid and find out.

  • It depends on what your income is after you're married.
  • If yours and his combined salary are above the income limits set for medicaid, then yes.  If combined you still make under the cut off point for income, then your benefits would continue as normal.

I am not on medicaid, so this isn't first hand experience, but I have had  more than a few friends use it and this is what I have picked up from their talking.

  • If you can pay for the insurance till October 2013. You can sign up for the Health Exchange. That's when "obamacare" comes out and you will be offered great insurance for practically nothing. Since you apply for medicaid now, you will get a federal government subsidy for your insurance that will cover the costs for you, hubby and baby. So if you can pay for your insurance till then, go for it. If not I would wait.
  • I have applied for our benefits as a married couple. We're even getting rushed benefits. No biggie. It's about income and costs, not your marital status

  • When doing a head count of the family members does the baby count?
  • Yes. Although it may differ from state to state, just make sure to either check that  your pregnant on your application or tell your social worker so you are able to get the proper benefits.
