Trying to Get Pregnant

Intro and Q regarding mid cycle spotting :l

Hi girls,

I have been lurking for a bit but finally have a question I think I could use some advice on!

DH and I are have been TTC since September 2012 (more so throwing our chances to the wind the first few months) however we have stepped it up this month and I've started charting. DH is 34 me 29, no children yet. My cycles are pretty regular averaging about 28 days.

My question is regarding the mid cycle spotting/bleeding I experienced CD 19, which was this past Friday (has never happened to me before). A brief backstory and why I wasn't initially concerned... DH and I went on a road trip to from MI to SC to visit his grandma this past week (which quickly proved to make our start to charting this month ineffective), I didn't chart the entire week while we were gone :(

Possible TMI begins...On top of our drive through the mountains and all the pretty labor intensive work we did for grandma in her yard while we were down there, we had a pretty indulgent bar night on Wednesday night. Friday on our drive home is when the spotting/bleeding occurred. I went to the bathroom and noticed it pass when I went pee. It was a light red color and only a small amount (lighter red than my normal period blood flow). I assumed I had just started my period super early so I grabbed a tampon. At our next stop I removed it to check the amount of flow and it was fairly clean aside from a small amount of brownish blood. Only a tiny small amount of brownish blood appeared through the next morning.

Since Friday I have been thinking about the possible "symptoms" leading up to the spotting. I had a pretty mild headache on and off most of the week (prior to the heavy drinking day) and grandma told me it could have been from the humidity (never had an issue with that tholugh)...?! I had some abdominal "pangs" (little shock feelings) a couple of times, could have been ovulation, which I guess I would have known better if I were charting :( but I experienced them more than one day...and I guess it could have been gas.... And I've also had a lower backache, which is extremely normal for me at period time and leading up to, which is why I thought I had just started my period.

I've had the back ache as well as slight irritability and fatigue since, which leads me to believe my period is still on her way (I normally get all the pms symptoms about a week prior to her coming)... And I took a test yesterday and it was negative (though still early I guess, CD 22).

So my question is whether this warrants a call to my doc right away? I found one site that mentioned change in altitude having an affect on your body and causing mid cycle spotting but I don't like to self diagnose based on one article I read, especially since never having it...?!

If I do call my doc should I wait to see if my period comes first?

Sorry so long, and thank you to all who have some input!

Re: Intro and Q regarding mid cycle spotting :l

  • I'm sorry, yes I meant temping and I appear to be post O as my last 3 waking temps, including this morning, are much higher than earlier in my cycle.

So this is fairly "normal" then? If I start my period as expected I shouldn't worry?

  • I wouldn't worry about it. Spotting can happen anytime during a cycle and doesn't necessarily mean anything.

I'm not a spotting expert, and I haven't spotted,  but yes it seems like there are people on this board who spot every month. I believe you can have O spotting. That may have been what this was. I wouldn't make a special trip to the doctor over it, but maybe bring it up at your next annual. Since you missed a week of temping I would just count yourself as 3DPO, since you have had 3 days of higher  pre-O temps. Are you using fertility friend? It is a great resource and place to keep you temps. You can go in and put in the temps you have and see what it does.

Good food for thought, I will keep temping moving forward, thank you! And yes, I am using fertility friend and love it!!

  • Hello, I spot pretty much every month mid-cycle (for a few days around O).  I asked about it during the last pap I had and the doctor said it was pretty normal and didn't seem concerned.

I have googled it and some sites say that it's a good sign of fertility, but I'm on cycle 10 so I haven't put much faith in that.

    Good luck!

  • I spot all the time, for over a week straight between O and AF most cycles and the odd time pre-O, and used to always bleed mid-cycle while on the pill. A little spot here and there is nothing to be concerned about and certainly doesn't warrant a special trip to the doctor.
