3rd Trimester

Extremely painful period-like cramps

I know people have brought this up before, but last night, throughout the night, I had horrible horrible cramps.  I couldn't sleep for half the night, I was in such pain.  I know they're not contractions because they don't come and go-- it will be pain for 20+ minutes straight.  It's in my very lower uterus, right above my pelvic bone. What IS this and what can I do about it??!!

Re: Extremely painful period-like cramps

  • When I have had continuous, obviously not regular contraction pain it has been pretty soon after sex or when I need to have a BM.  Not sure if either one of those are your case.

Doctor told me Tylenol and lie down.

  • I have no clue what this is but I am having trouble with extremely painful period-like cramps as well. For me they started two nights ago, they only occur in the evening and it lasts for several hours until I somehow manage to fall asleep. They were worse last night than the night before and I am dreading seeing, or should I say... feeling what they would be like tonight if this trend continues.

I have theorized that it could be the baby settling deeper into my pelvis and causing this terrible pain. I've also contemplated that it could be from my pelvic bones and muscles stretching and preparing for labor. In any case, I sure hope it settles down because I was almost in tears last night. I just wanted to crawl right out of my own body and escape the pain.

I truly miss being able to take my old pain relievers (Ibuprofen and Aleve) because I hate Tylenol and therefore I have been going this whole pregnancy with no pain relief what-so-ever.

  • Usually a digestion issue for me when it is that painful; gas or constipation.

  • I found that increasing my water intake by a lot will make these kind of cramps go away.  I will literally drink water until my pee is clear and then keep drinking more!  I had these kind of cramps a few days ago and water helped them go away.

  • Sadly I cannot contribute my painful cramping to any of these things... I am going regularly 1-3 times a day... which is my pregnant average. (Sorry about the TMI) Also I am drinking plenty of water and a large variety of juices on a daily basis. Earlier in my pregnancy I would get contractions and found that drinking fluids would make them stop but that is because at the time, I wasn't consuming enough fluids regularly but I've changed in these last several months and now I make a conscious effort to consume enough good fluids daily. (By good fluids I mean water and juice, I don't drink coffee or soda at all.)

As for the constipation theory... my pre-pregnancy average was less, so I am thinking I'm good in this department. Luckily I am very in tune with my body so I generally have a good idea of what is going on with it. With the exception of things strictly pregnancy related... such as what it feels like for a baby to drop, what it feels like for the head to descend to farther stations, what it feels like for a pelvis to ready itself for labor and what it feels like for a cervix to thin and dilate... that being said, maybe my craps are due to any one of those things. I mean who knows... everything inside me is squished beyond belief, so perhaps it's that? It actually feels a bit like the pain that sets in after a few minutes of laying on my back. (Because the heavy tummy squishes me.)

However, my baby may be squishing me more than average since I am SO petite... and he is occupying every inch from my diaphragm to my pubic bone. The other thing that makes me assume it's pregnancy related is the uncanny timing of starting right around 6pm every night. Tonight is night three and sadly I am enduring it once again.

  • I have had these constantly for over a week. I asked my doctor about it and she didn't seem concerned, just my body getting ready for my little man to come out and meet the world. (There was no extra dilation or effacement than before.) They have gotten so bad where I just laid in bed balling my eyes out because of the pain, and mine always started in the evening as well. The only thing that helped the pain subside even the slightest was laying on my left side and taking some Tylenol. Good luck, hope you feel better soon.

  • I'm sorry you're having such painful cramping! Last pregnancy, I had something similar around 30 weeks. I had the painful low cramping and irregular contractions. It ended up being a kidney stone I was passing. It couldn't hurt to contact your ob so they can rule out ptl, uti, or stones. Good luck!

  • I had these same cramps over the weekend at night from about 10-12pm. It literally hurt so bad I was on the floor (very close to going to the ER). I feel like its too early for me though since I am 28w5d. However about chugging water and a large bowel movement on Sunday, I am feeling great today and no more cramps.
