Now I get it...

When people told me to avoid keeping the house quiet when Allison was a baby I didn't get it.  Now I do.  The kid wakes up to every.single.noise.

Next time (if there is a next time!) I will run the vacuum, dishwasher, hair dryer and anything else I can think of when the baby is napping!  I can't have two kids who wake up to a pin dropping.

Re: Now I get it...

  • If it helps, Leo slept in the dining room for the first 3 months of life (I have an open floor plan so it's exposed to the kitchen and living room). I cooked, played music, the dog barked, ran the vacuum, etc, etc, etc.... and I still have a light sleeper :(.

Around 4 months he just wouldn't sleep like that anymore and to this day he needs to be in a dark room with white noise. I'm not convinced that heavy sleepers can be trained because I tried SO hard and it still didn't work.

  • Audra can generally sleep through minor household noises and the dog barking but we still use the white noise machine and the humidifier has been running in her room since the beginning of winter. She will wake up the minute I turn the white noise machine off though.

This is Allison too! We do play white noise when she is sleeping, but the minute that is turned off she is wide awake.

  • When brayden naps we just put the fan in the bathroom on it really makes a difference. Without the fan its less than an hour with the fan 2.5 to 3 hrs.
Everyone use to tell us that too but at the time we never wanted to risk walking up a sleeping baby!
  • I can totally relate. I just sneezed twice and Austin woke up from his nap. :( We have a white noise machine in his room, and he is usually fine, but today he's having a not so great nap day.

  • I am so with you. I tiptoe and don't run anything when she is napping. Before she was born, I told myself I'd make lots of noise to get her used to it, but then reality came and she (probably) had colic and life was a nightmare when she was little. So if she was ACTUALLY asleep back then, heck if I was going to run or do anything to possibly wake her up. All I wanted in the world was to be able to sleep myself anyway, not run a machine. So here we are and she's just as sensitive to noise as I am. It sucks but it is what it is. I will try to do it differently if there is a next time but I know now that even the best intentions have to face reality.
