I never ever thought I would use cloth diapers, but after looking at how much cheaper it is, here I am. I'm planning on making my own. there are so many different styles, how do you choose which is the best?
Making your own and your siggy says you're 41 weeks?! Oh, give yourself a break and buy some!
You won't really know what you'll like best until you try them on your baby. Every baby is shaped differently. I would buy 12 to 24 small sized prefolds, 8 newborn fitteds, 5 newborn covers, and maybe 2 newborn AIOs to get you started. You can then figure out what you like and have time to make (or bargain hunt and buy) diapers for beyond the newborn stage.
At this stage, you might cut yourself a little slack and go ahead and use nb disposables while you give yourself time to get together one size diapers.
Those begin fitting at 8 lbs. though they seem to begin fitting well at 10 lbs. Unless you have a pretty small baby that probably won't be too long and you can focus on making good choices about what you'll be using for the next few years.
I personally have a huge stash of Kawaii, Alva, and Sunbaby. I love them all and have been just as happy with my "off brand" dipes as with the Grovia and Bum Genius I have. Everyone has their own preference though and it can vary even from baby to baby.
I tried prefold and covers but switched exclusively to pockets because it meant my husband and babysitter were totally on board. The prefolds freaked them both out too much to use.
How much are you looking to spend? How big is your LO?
flats and covers would be the easiest to make and cheapest, but you'd have to learn how to fold them.
Prefolds and covers would be next. I think maybe knitting covers would be easier than sewing PUL...I'd be afraid to put all of that work into sewing the PUL and not have them fit LO properly! (They only cost $13)
A set of 2 dozen prefolds and 4 covers would be about $140 brand new.
Check out Cloth Diapering 101 on youtube (7 pts) for an overview of the diaper types.
I personally, wouldn't sew them myself... however if you're an amazing seamstress then go for it.
If you're looking into styles, go to my blog (in siggy) and click on "cloth diapering" at the top, it will walk you through a lot of it. It can be overwhelming!
I choose covers and inserts because of cost.
