Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Professional Photographers: Tip or Don't Tip?

Those of you who have done photo sessions with your little ones, do you tip the photographer?

We have a photographer that has photographed our twins at birth, 3 mos, 6mos and 9 mos.  It just occurred to me when we did their 9 month session that perhaps I should tip her on top of her fee since she is photographing 2 babies for the same session fee she normally charges for just 1 baby.  The time of our sessions isn't extended because there are 2 babies, but it is a bit more challenging.

What say you?

Re: Professional Photographers: Tip or Don't Tip?

  • I haven't use anyone for my LO, but I did tip our wedding photographer.  I think your reasoning makes sense and a tip would be nice.  Just keep in mind that once you start, you can't really stop, so keep the tip at a level you're comfortable with and will be able to continue to afford.  You have a couple of cuties up there!!

  • we just use commercial studios and I've never tipped.  I don't remember, but I don't believe we tipped our wedding photographer.  I've you've already had 4 sessions and not tipped, and you're happy with the services, so obviously the photographer isn't offended, I wouldn't tip.  If you're going to continue this for a while maybe give something at Christmas, but I think that's enough

  • We didn't.  Our baby photographer runs her own business and costs and arm and a leg.  I don't think she expects a tip.

  • Thanks for the input.  We've done birth, 3, 6, 9 and will do 12. I think we will also do a family session in addition to that.  I will likely buy her a nice bottle of wine or something when we are all done with the series of photos since she has done such an outstanding job.

  • i am a photographer and i rarely get tipped... i'm okay with it, i price according to what i need to earn, tips are nice, but def not expected!
  • I have been around photogs my whole life. Tipping is not common. That said, would I tip if she did a fantastic job with DD, or if the prints come out better than I expected? Yes.

I didn't the one we used for our DD's newborn photos.  I didn't like how they turned out.  I ended up doing her newborn photos.  We are getting a family photo set done, and it is a guy who I have grown up with is going to do them next weekend.  I am supper excited.  I haven't seen him since I moved from Canada to Florida over 18 months ago.  He is going to charge us a discounted price if we pay cash, but it is still steep.  I don't know if I will tip him, but may bring him some sort of gift card as a thank you.  He did our wedding photos.
