I had a long talk with my OB this week because they are worried about the baby's size. I have GD and polyhydramnios, and they believe the baby is 8#9oz at 37 weeks. So we could be looking at a 10-11# baby. I've had BPPs 2x/week since 33 weeks and the weight has been steadily rising, and I would tend to believe it's true. My doctor told me because of all these factors, I have some decisions to make.
GD increases the risk of baby being large and having macrosomia (where the shoulders and trunk are chunky).
Polyhydramnios can cause a cord prolapse if my water breaks, or they break my water during induction, which would require a stat c-section.
My first was 8#15oz, and was a mild shoulder dystocia. He wasn't stuck long and suffered no ill effects, but it wasn't a terribly easy delivery. And it was pretty scary.
The plan is to deliver the baby when I'm 39 weeks. Now I have to decide if I want to try induction. My OB said my cervix is favorable and from that aspect i should be good to go. However the risk of cord prolapse or shoulder dystocia during delivery is something we have to be prepared for and we won't know if either will be a problem until we get there. He told me he would be quick to recommend a c-section if baby showed any signs of distress during delivery.
Or- I can schedule a c-section.
I'm torn. I obviously don't want a c-section, but I also don't want to labor and have something go wrong and potentially have DS be injured or need a stat c-section.
WWYD? What else would you ask the doctor, take into consideration, etc? Any advice is appreciated. When I go for my BPP on Thursday we will be scheduling something, whether it's induction or c-section.
Re: tough decision
ETA I missed the csection part. I wouldn't worry about a csection either. My recovery from my first was WAY worse than a lot of my csection friends and it was a vaginal birth. I think either are a viable option. I would actually just ask the doctor which he recommends in his medical opinion and go with that!
