Breastfeeding

I need to stop nursing to sleep.

Ds nurses to sleep at every bedtime and most naps. I need to stop this because I'm about to go back to work and I won't be home every night to nurse him to bed. How do I break this cycle so ds doesn't lose his mind when I'm at work?

Re: I need to stop nursing to sleep.

  • I still nurse DD to sleep at night and for naps whenever I am with her and I don't mind at all.  I don't mind because I know that when she's not with me, other people have been able to get her to go to sleep by rocking her and giving her a pacifier or even (at daycare) by just swaddling her, giving her a pacifier and laying her down in her crib.

As long as he knows how to go to sleep other ways, why do you need to stop nursing him to sleep when you're with him?

  • I agree with pp.  If you don't mind doing it, the caregivers while you are away will find their own methods.  I, my DH, and daycare, and grandparents if they have him, all have our own methods and DS has always napped for us all.  I nursed, DH lays with him, daycare just pats backs in a crib, gma rocks...   DS1 always fell asleep nursing anyhow and had to eat before bed, so it's not like I could have stopped it anyhow.  Unless you plan to wake an already sleeping baby to put him back to sleep, which seems counterproductive.

Exactly all of this.  I still nurse DD#2 to sleep and still will. It's just what "we" do together.  Obviously my DH doesn't nurse her to sleep and he can still put her down just fine if I'm not around.  He rocks her or something.  Honestly I'm not sure what he does but it works!

  • Me too! He just falls asleep at the bottle instead of the boob for everyone else.

  • I'm on mobile so I can't see how old your LO is. What we did, though, is we changed the bedtime routine. Instead of nursing after her bath, we did boob, bath and then lullaby. We also sleep trained.

However, agree with the PPs that your LO will learn to go to sleep for different caregivers.

  • I don't mind nursing him to sleep when I'm with him. I'm just afraid dh will struggle with him when I'm at work.

He might struggle the first few times, but then LO will get the hang of going to sleep with him in another way. Just make sure your DH is prepared for it to be a little tricky starting out.
