Bottle problems, or normal newborn stuff?

Question for STMs:

We are using Tommy Tippee bottles. With the nursettes at the hospital DS ate without any issues. With the Tommy Tippees once we got home, it took him some time to adjust. The size 1 nipples for newborns came with the bottles, and it seemed like he had to work a lot harder to get anything from them, and like he was getting a lot of air with it. After talking to the pediatrician we've switched to the size 2 nipples today- now it seems like he's still used to the size 1s and gulped it down too fast. I'm sure it will just take him some time to get used to them.

Has anyone else had issues with these bottles? I got them because they got such great reviews. Stupid me, I bought a ton of them and all the accessories, rather than waiting to see what he would like best, so if I can make them work I'd like to rather than buy a whole new supply of bottles. He seems to be getting a lot of air from them but we always get him to burp. Sometimes he will spit up, or get hiccups. Are these just normal newborn things as he figures out bottles? These are the times I wish my mom were around! Thanks in advance.

  • Ugh! With DS1, I ended up trying a lot of different ones before I found one the worked. He was primarily BF, so I think the trial and error came with the territory. We finally ended up with Dr Brown's wideneck bottles, but I have a vast collection of others I tried before we had success. I hate to think what I spent!

  • I think it definitely takes some adjusting.

DS did great with the little bottles at the hospital but struggled when we got home and used the playtex drop ins. He would act like he was drowning using it. It took a day or two and now I He seems to have better control and less hiccups. I'm sure it's the same for any bottle type, it's something new they have to get used to.

  • We used TT bottles and I'm not sure I'd use the level 2 flow for a NB.  We stepped DS up to those when he was like 4 months if not older and it was a lot for him.  What about the variable flow nipples they sell for TT bottles?

Also, we had trouble with some of our TT bottles at first- make sure to pinch the little valve that's off to the side of the nipple.  Sometimes they get sealed up and then DS would have trouble.  If you just pinch it so it opens, it solves the problem.

  • I love my playtex drop ins. It has reduced Ella's grassiness so much!! She doesn't even have to burp sometimes. I would totally recommend them. She did get annoyed switching from the nursettes to the newborn slow flow nipples but got used to it.

  • I love the Tommee Tippee bottles. My lo is four weeks old and used these since we came home. She struggled for a bit but she ended up having acid reflux and nothing related to the bottles.
  • We had the best luck with playtex nursers, playtex ventaire, and the cheap plastic gerber bottles. DD1 was EBF until 10 weeks though. My letdown was fast, so we started with medium flow nipples. She had to work too hard with the slow flows.
