Sweetening Coffee?

I am trying to get to where I  can drink my coffee black, but I'm just not there yet and was hoping for some healthy/natural ideas on how to sweeten it.

I don't use creamer or half and half, but do currently use Splenda since that's what my husband prefers to keep in the house. Looking for a healthier alternative!

Re: Sweetening Coffee?

  • No sugar is all that great, but I like to use Agave.

  • I prefer real sugar over splenda.
I've heard of some people using honey. I was horrible disappointed in agave. It didnt sweeten much or I had to use a ton, which defeated the purpose for me.

There's raw sugar or brown sugar if you just want to keep away from processed sugar.

Also, just work on tapering the amount you use. Either real or fake. It won't take too long before you can drink it black. Maybe give it a week and halve the amount each time.

I used to use fake sugars like splenda, but now I could probably get away with less than a quarter of a packet!!

OH! If you like the super sweet taste like splenda you would like Stevia, which is different than truvia. It's very concentrated so I would consistently get to sweet of coffee. But I think it's supposed to be the best natural sweetener on the market. ??
It comes in lots of varieties too, powder in a jar, powder in packets, tablets, and liquid. I've only tried the powder since I'm cheap.

Well I hope some of that helped! Sorry I rambled!!

  • The best natural options are raw honey or pure maple syrup.

Agave is not as natural as one may be led to believe (link) the process used to extract it is not natural.

Stevia, there aren't enough studies yet to prove it's safety. I would avoid ALL artificial sweeteners, I'm with PP, I would take real sugar over splenda.

I use raw honey in my coffee and tea and baking, and maple syrup on some recipes and my smoothies. HTH!

  • Healthwise, I believe it's better to use smaller amounts of real sugar than any of the fake stuff.

If you're just trying to lose weight, I think you're better off satisfying that sweet craving every once in awhile than to try to trick yourself with alternatives.  That'll just lead to a binge situation.

If you're trying to avoid processed foods, I agree with PP...get Raw sugar.

  • Thanks guys! I remember reading an article about Agave not being as natural as some think it is. I am trying to avoid processed foods so raw sugar sounds like a good option for me.

  • I prefer real maple syrup because I like the way the flavors go together.
  • I love cinnamon in my coffee! It doesn't dissolve, so make sure you put in the grounds, not the brewed coffee.

  • If you are going for least processed, then raw honey or Grade B maple syrup are the way to go. Although you may also want to try coconut milk... I have also seen some coconut sugar??? Blue Agave is supposed to be better than regular, as far as its ability to be metabolized by the body.
  • Splenda is so bad! It's a chemical just like other sweeteners. I use organic whole cane sugar.

  • I've been using coconut sugar.  Lower glycemic index.  If I don't have that on hand, I use plain ol' sugar.

  • If you're looking for a calorie free option stevia would be the healthiest. You can but it in powder form or a liquid form. You may have to go to a health food store for pure stevia. Sometimes companies mix stevia with sugar or another sweetener. Stevia is natural and harmless. I prefer the powder form over the liquid. I can sever dispense it right and too much is dispensed and it can bee icky if yu use too much.
