David Edward has arrived

Friday morning at about 2:30 am I awoke to an odd sensation and an urge to pee. Got up, when I wiped I noticed a bit of pink watery discharge.  Figured bloody show but was confused by the wateryness of it.  Contractions started  around 3:30am but were not consistant.  About 5:30 I noticed I was still leaking this pink watery stuff and also noticed a blood clot.  Decided to have dh take me to l&d for my peace of mind.  Got checked, tests to determine if water broke came back inconclusive or negative.  They measured my AFI at about an 8 -- it was about 10 on Thursday afternoon.  I was dialated to a 3 at that point so they decided to have me get up and walk around and see what happened as they didn't want to send me home if my water truly had broken.

Checked me out again around 10ish.  The dr went to measure the AFI again and realized that what they thought was a big pocket of fluid was actually the u/c.  At that point they realized that my water did break. I was dialated to a 4 and the contractions were a consistant 10 minutes apart and showing no signs of getting closer (they were an inconsistant 5-12 minutes apart while I was walking) so they decided to start pitocin to try getting the contractions closer.  I declined the epidural in favor of receiving IV pain meds.  My older two kids arrived about the time that they were starting the pit.  Dh sent them to get lunch and when they returned he had them take turns supporting me through contractions and then after consulting with the doctor, he left to get some lunch.  When he left I was almost dialated to a 5.  When he returned 20-30 minutes later, he asked if he missed anything.  He was told I was dialated to a 9 and to get ready for delivery!   I had told the nurse I had changed my mind about the epi -- that prompted the last cervical check and the response I heard was "forget the epidural, we're delivering."

David was born at 2:11 pm weighing 5lbs 14 oz and 19 inches long.  He was born at 36w4d -- He does have Down Syndrome and some related problems with nursing and newborn jaundice.  I chose to give him a few CCs of formula and the dr said that decision probably kept him out of NICU for blood sugar related issues.

We both came home today and David has avoided the NICU so Mom is happy.

Dd was present for the full delivery but ds1 stepped out shortly before dh's return and he fortunately didn't return until they were stitching me up (ds1 doesn't handle the sight of blood very well)
