Babies: 3 - 6 Months

5 1/2 Month Old Waking 3-4 Times/Night

Hello Ladies,

I need some advice. My first daughter (now over 2) started sleeping through the night around four months, on her own for the most part. She would go to bed at 7:00 pm, wake around 5:00 am and have a feeding, and go back to sleep until 7:00 am.

My second daughter is five ad a half months old. She wants to eat every two hours during the day still, and at night she wants to go to sleep anywhere between 6-7:00 pm (I try to make her last until 7:00 but that doesn't always work). I feed her right before she goes to sleep. She has absolutely no problem going to sleep on her own. I lay her down fully away, turn her musical crib thing on, and leave the room. She's asleep within five minutes, and I very rarely have to go back in to comfort her.

For the past month or so, she has been waking at 9:00, 12:00, 2-3:00, 5:00, and then is up and ready to be awake for the day at 6:45. When she wakes up, she is clearly wanting to nurse. I have tried not feeding her and she just screams until I do. Once I feed her and burp her, she is still awake, I put her down, turn her music on, and she falls asleep on her own.  Sometimes she is wet so I change her (in the dark so I don't wake her any more).

At our four month check, the Pediatrician said that if she woke up a lot at night we could try rice cereal before bed and see if that helped. We did that for one week and she woke up just as often as when I just nursed her before bed.

Any suggestions? She's a healthy weight, and she eats plenty during the day. Should I try to wean her from a couple of her nighttime feedings, or keep feeding on demand, even if it is 3-4 times a night? She is a great nurser, and I don't want to mess anything up, but I am so tired! I can't just take a nap when she does because I have another child to take care of, so it's not like I can catch up on my sleep at all.

Thank you so much for your suggestions.

The rice cereal before bed advice is garbage because it doesn't work. IMO, if she is waking in the night and eating a decent amount then she really is hungry and you should keep feeding her. Lots of BF babies eat more often and comfort nurse in the night which is normal, especially at this age.

I'm sure you've noticed with your other child that babies go through different stages of sleep and one month might be really good then the next month they are up more often but it always passes. Heck, maybe she's having a growth spurt or something that's making her more hungry. My almost 1 year still changes constantly and so do his needs. I say just roll with it for now and see what happens :)

    All of this.

  • Ummmm, feed her. She's hungry. Don't try to feed her rice (won't work) or wean (she's hungry). Suck it up, she's a baby and this is what they do. It won't last forever.
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
  • my baby does the same thing!  ahhhhhhh!  i have no advice, but misery loves company, right?  i have been falling asleep furing the night while i nurse him.  its awful.
