Scared of listeria infection

Someone talk me off the ledge! I ate a turkey sandwich from a deli on Friday afternoon that was heated up on Thursday but then refrigerated. I woke up last night with intense back and stomach pains along with diarrhea and nausea. I am so scared I got listeria even though I know it is super rare. My OB is not concerned but I cant stop thinking about it!

Re: Scared of listeria infection

  • Listeria usually takes a few weeks to appear. Plus the symptoms are more present in the baby in-utero or after birth than to the mother. In addition, listeria usually from cross contamination from the meat cutter machines, not because it was refrigerated and eaten cold.

I eat deli meat almost weekly... you have a higher risk of getting listeria from raw vegetables than deli meat.

  • I would just focus on the positive things that are happening...if your doctor doesn't think it is serious then I would agree with him. I thought that too because I ate cantoloupe for a week and then someone at work told me about listeria - I was so scared but said to myself as long as she is moving everything is ok! I hope that helps a little.
