Parenting after a Loss

WWPALD - surgery related (long)

Hi ladies. I'm a lurker from PGAL and know some of you from the Loss, TTCAL, and PGAL boards.

I am lucky and thankful to find myself pregnant again. I'm trying my best to focus on the present and enjoying each day but from time to time thinking about the future is necessary.

I'm here today to ask you lovely ladies for some advice.  Back story: Pre-pregnancies I used to play soccer and run. In Oct. 2012 I re-tore the ACL in my right knee. I had torn the ACL & had surgery in 2002. So I got about 10 good years out of it.  After this most recent tear I went to the Ortho and after tests & PT in Jan. it was determined that I would need ACL reconstruction surgery again. Ok, I've been through it once. I know what it entails and want to have the surgery so that I can be active once again.  (Currently my knee hurts almost every time I take a step.)

So the question is: when should I think about surgery? My EDD for this pregnancy is 9/25. Obviously I can't have it now because of the pregnancy.  I would like to EBF and plan on taking 6 months maternity leave from work.

The surgery will involve a lot of pain and an extensive recovery time. From past experience I would expect to be immobile for about a week and on heavy drugs. Then on crutches for another week or two and then gimping with a leg/knee brace for the next few months.

I don't want to put off the surgery for too long because I would like to be able to be active and not in pain. Would I be crazy to have such a surgery when my LO is about 9 or 10 months old?

If you've made it this far here are some cupcakes:

  • I agree w/ Theresa that a little earlier might be easier because early on they can't get away from you but have developed enough that nursing gets easier in different positions.

  • Ditto around the six month mark. Once LO gets mobile, even just crawling, it's a different ball game.

  • I am thinking even earlier 3-4 months? . For one reason, you baby will not be mobile (crawling or walking) and also during the first few months your baby will sleep a lot! This will allow you to get the rest you need as well. I know in the beginning you will be largely dependent on your SO and/or family members but after a few weeks, you will still need time to rest/heal. However, once your baby is born you will know if its possible as some babies are very high needs or have colic. Can you put off deciding until LO is born?

  • Thanks for the advice, ladies. This (hopefully) will be my first living child so I'm not exactly sure what to expect from LO. No decisions need to be made today or really, until LO is here but I just wanted to get any idea of timing and things I might not be aware of.

DH is a professor so only gets extended time off during winter or summer break so I would want to try to coordinate with that.  My mom and sister did say they would be willing to help out as well.
