March 2012 Moms

Nursing moms

When you wean, how are you planning on stopping the morning session?

DD nurses right when she wakes up at 6 AM and gets upset if I'm not nursing her immediately. Then she will eat cereal about 2 hrs later.

Are you going to offer breakfast right off in the morning or just milk?

Re: Nursing moms

  • The morning nursing is the only one we have left. I'm ready to be done with nursing....but at the same time I'm not ready to give it up, kwim?

The plan is to have breakfast then or if she isn't quite ready to offer her a cup of milk. She does fairly well if she has to play for a few minutes before nursing so hoping to eventually have her play for a bit before wanting to have breakfast.

DS is still nursing 2-4 times per day. Not sure yet whether I will encourage him to drop them or let him do it on his own.

When he skips the first morning nursing sometimes now (1x/week?), we give him breakfast immediately, usually something quick, like dry cereal and fruit or toast with almond butter or marmite. He will wait, but lets us know he is unhappy about waiting...

The one I am unsure about dropping is the nursing to sleep.

Same here!!!  That and the middle of the night session.. sigh..

DS still nurses around 4-5 times a day.  We haven't started cow's milk yet (he had an ear infection and the antibiotics totally messed his stomach up so I wanted to wait until that was completely over) but I'll start him on it soon.  He's never skipped the morning nursing session but I think if DH gets him from the crib and gives him breakfast, he'll be okay.  If I get him, he's going to want to nurse.

Have any of you started giving cow's milk yet?  Are you mixing it with pumped milk, giving it in a separate bottle/sippy, nursing and then giving WCM in a cup after?

  • My DS is no where near ready to ween. Honestly on weekends he would rather nurse Vs' eat. I think that I will just follow his que. When my DD was this age she was already so over nursing and only last 13 months. I am kind-of so done with pumping! I can deal with the nursing.

  • I will probably offer him breakfast with milk. We are still nursing 5 times a day, so I don't see weaning anytime soon. I'm still ok with nursing, so I'll probably just follow his cue.

  • DD nursed 4 times a day: When she wakes up, before each nap, and before bed. Some mornings she wants to nurse right away when she wakes up, and other mornings (like today) she completely forgets about it until I remind her. I'm not planning on weaning her until the middle-ish of our second pregnancy (starting TTC in a couple months) because I'm not into tandem nursing.

When I drop the morning session, I think we'll just snuggle instead, and I'll make her a warm cup of WCM. We have breakfast right away already, so we'll keep that up too.

DD is on two sippys of WCM. I just replaced her meal time nursing sessions with a sippy. I was mixing with my freezer BM, but she wouldn't take much. When we went to 100 WCM, she started showing more interest and now drinks the whole sippy.
  • I just did this two weeks ago. DS turned 1 on wednesday. I was feeding DS at 5 or 6 am then he would fall back asleep. I would send DH in to put his paci back in. He would cry a little but after 3 rough days he would sleep till 7..not even try to nurse when we picked him up. So we just make sure to have his sippy cup ready at 7 - 7:30 when he wakes up. At the time I weaned I also started mixing my bm with whole milk so it's been maybe a week and a half of whole milk mixed in his bm. I may have just enough to get through the weekend and them he will be on whole milk all together. DS also gets breakfast when he gets to daycare around 8 am.

I just wanted to jump in. I started mixing cows milk when I gave him the sippy cup almost two weeks ago. But only an ounce in one sippy cup a day. The next I would add an ounce to other cups, then keep increasing. So right now two weeks later we are at half bm and half cows milk per sippy cup. And let me tell you my son is so gassy right now. But not to the point he is unhappy. He has done just fine. I am so sad to think I have bf for a year and my stash in the freezer is gone already! But I did want to stop at some point because I am worn out from pumping all day  at work.

My DS is the same way in regards to wanting to nurse vs eat! I was hoping that if I stopped pumping my supply would dry up & DS would lose interest, but that doesn't seem to be working.
