C-sections

How long after c-section until you can TTC?

I had pre-e, LO developed IUGR and I had a c-section with my LO.  I never discussed how long I should wait with my OB...although, I guess I should make an appointment and do that.

The reason I am thinking about TTC again is because I had IF (diagnosis was DOR) with my first baby and just got some test results back (AMH levels) that were very, very bad and may indicate I don't have much time before going into menopause.

IF DX: DOR & Fragile X pre-mutation carrier
2011: FSH 13.3 & E 99; AMH 0.54 2nd FSH 6.2 E 40's AFC: 8
BFP from Clomid/IUI ~ Pre-e and IUGR during pregnancy ~ DS born 9/4/12
Feb./March 2013: AMH less than 0.16 (undectable) and AFC = 4;
BFP from supps ~ DS#2 due May 2014

Re: How long after c-section until you can TTC?

  • Most OB's will recommend a minimum of a year, to a year and a half before attempting to get pregnant again to avoid possible complications and to allow the body to heal.

  • My Dr told me 18 months between births is the general rule of thumb, but she hoped I would wait 18 months before being pregnant again as it can take up to one year to be well healed internally.

This - My OB said to wait at least 9 months before TTC, which would be at least 18 months between c-sections.

Obviously go by what your OB says for your specific situation.  But my OB told me no less than 6 months.  I had a textbook pregnancy and textbook c-section though, so our situations are different.

  • My OB said a year before TTC but I ended up pregnant due to birth control issues 8 months later. I had 2 c-sections 17 months apart with no problems. This baby will be my third :)

  • After a c-section with my first I just had to have another section on the 25th with my second, they're 18 months apart and I'm healing just fine so maybe waiting 9 months would be a good idea.

  • I had to do IVF both times, and I was rapidly approaching 40 (which I hit a few days ago), so both my RE and OB recommended trying again ASAP, and preferably before turning 40.  So, since we weren't sure if we'd be lucky on the first try again, I went back to the RE shortly after DD was born for testing and getting a plan together, and I was back on BCPs for my IVF cycle by the time DD was 5 months old.

Definitely not ideal planning, but luckily we were successful on the first try again, and since I'm having my tubes tied, we're planning on a RCS.  Just hoping the pregnancy is as uneventful as our first.

  • My second baby was a surprise and there is only 11 months between my daughters. My pregnancy was fine.. C-section recovery was harder the second time, but didn't have anything to do with how soon I got pregnant. I'm now pregnant with number 3 and this is the easiest pregnancy so far. There will be 27 months between my last two c-sections.

  • My ob said I could get pregnant whenever I wanted.  And I could attempt a vbac even if I had gotten pregnant the first cycle.
  • DS1 and ds2 are 15mths apart, ds2 and ds3 are 20 1/2 months apart.

My OB never gave me a time frame and when I came in pg with ds2 he just laughed and shook his head (we have a very joking/friendly relationship). He did say they like there to be 18 mths between deliveries if you wanted a vbac but they would allow me to attempt it with ds2. I had no desire and planned my c/s.

  • I would follow what the doctor says and keep up to date with the recent studies like the below:

  • General rule seems to be 18 months.  Check with your OB to make sure though since everyone is different.

  • My OB said to wait 18 months between C-sections, so I guess that would make it starting TTC at 9 months. However, we had a surprise pregnancy at 6 months past my C-section and ended up with 14 months between the two C-sections (both pregnancies were pre-term with fluid complications).  My doc wasn't thrilled that I was pregnant so soon, but she wasn't extremely worried about it either.  She mostly worried about me having similar complications the second time around. She watched me like a hawk.

  • We dealt with IUGR, polyhydramnios, placenta previa, and multiple gestation and I was told one year- no exceptions. However, I don't know if that wait time is greatly influenced by the complications. My RE told me I can't space my children by more than one to two years due to declining ovarian reserve and suspected egg quality issues, so I truly understand the panic. Lots of hugs your way.

  • My OB that did my C/S said wait atleast 9 months to try. The OB I am seeing for this pregnancy says the body heals after 6 weeks 20 years ago women had a baby every year and no one freaked out on them.
  • I'm in a different situation. My Dr asked me, no begged me to wait at least 15 months so that it would be 2 years between c-sections. I had a long and difficult labor then very scary emergency c-section. I have no issue with the waiting as we are now pretty far out and still not TTC yet. I loved my Dr, trusted him, and listened to his reasoning and respected him for caring about me.

Definitely listed to whatever your OB says and try to stick with that suggestion.
