Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Flying vs. driving 1200 miles with DS

We are planning a trip from MI to Naples, FL to visit DH's grandparents in late February/early March.  With gas prices being so low right now, it's much cheaper to drive.  There are pros and cons to both driving and flying with a 13-month old.  The biggest ones being that DS is not used to being held for long periods of time and having to check so many baby items, which concerns me about the flight; and the possible bad weather that we always seem to get when we make the drive, plus DS's restlessness in the car.  I don't know what to do!

Re: Flying vs. driving 1200 miles with DS

  • Hands down I would fly. The extra cost would be worth it to us, 1200 miles (so what, 2 days?) in the car would be way too much. We drove to FL from GA over Thanksgiving and a normal 6 hour trip took 7.5, so factor in that it will take longer than usual.

  • Imo I would never drive that far with ds or dd. I would rather rip all the hair out of my head one by one! We have flewn multiple times to NJ from SoFL and I would far rather spend 2.5 hours on a plane than 20+ hours in a car.
  • Also, would you have to pay to stay in a hotel for 2 nights (1 on the way down, 1 on the way up)? When you add in that cost, gas, and food it may not be cheaper to drive!

  • Fly...  We're doing MA to Naples in Feb.  Any big things can be rented (like the pack and play)   Besides Ft Myers is such an easy airport.  Gate check your stroller and carseat and you'll be fine.
  • Thanks girls, that helps. I'm just soooo nervous about keeping DS occupied on the plane.  Would you ship your pack-n-play down ahead of time or check it?

  • I wouldn't ship it, I would check it, but just know it counts as a piece of luggage, only car seats and strollers are exempt from the luggage count, so if you fly an airline that charges for more than 1 bag per passenger you may have to pay for it. Do you think you could see if your family has anyone they can borrow one from?

Trust me, we have flown with ds lots of times, and 4 times on flights that were 9 plus hours each way and just being on the plane is interesting to him. Your son will watch people, play with stuff like the plane magazines and stuff like that. You will be fine!

  • I'm going to go with driving.  We've driven cross-country with DD plus several 13 + hour trips.  The thought of flying with her makes me very uncomfortable for some reason.  I feel more secure having our car with us and not having to worry about carseat installation etc.  Guess I'm weird, but there you have it.
