IEP goals

How do you know what to make the goals for your IEP? I mean, I would love for my little one to crawl but he doesn't even roll consistently. He can't get on all fours. I don't foresee him being able to do much more in 3 months than he can do now. He gains skills then loses them. I feel like it is one step forward and one step back. I feel like we are going no where.

I am looking into social security disability for him, but I don't know what to do there either. I do feel like if I put the wrong thing on his IEP that it might effect that.

I have no idea what I'm doing. I'm so lost.

Re: IEP goals

  • Yes an IFSP not an IEP. I don't know why I always get those 2 mixed up.

My husband is only working part time. I am not working because I lost my job when I was in a car accident and that was the same time we were really catching his delays. So now between my LO and myself, we have on average 2 appointments a day. Usually doctors appointments or therapies.

  • Lauren's original IFSP goals were rolling both ways and sitting up. I couldn't even imagine crawling when we started, but lo and behold she army crawls 8 months after we started EI.

Make the goals whatever you want! I just thought of age appropriate things I would like her to do. Next school year will be different because a lot of the age related goals just won't be realistic, so we'll just choose different ones.

  • You can always ask your team for suggestions, but IFSP goals are driven by what would be best for the family. I always ask at the end of my program plannings, "I'm not a miracle worker by any stretch, but if I could magically change one thing TOMORROW that would make your family's life a lot easier, what would it be?" Parents usually don't have to think long and 9 times out of 10 we use that as one of our goals for the year. Also, remember the IFSP should be fluid you can change it if needed.
