I was scheduled for my induction on Wednesday due to my GD. I started out at 1 cm and 50% effaced (which is where I have been since week 36). They started me on Pitocin at 7 AM since according to the monitors I was having contractions, they were just not anything too strong that I was really noticing them. By 2:30 they checked and I was still at 1 cm, but I was now at 75% effaced. They kept the Pitocin going.
DH and I started doing laps on our floor of L&D. By 4:45 I was starting to get much stronger contractions more frequently. My Dr. checked me at 5:15 and I was still where I was at 2:30. Because of the contractions my Dr discussed the options of continuing the Pitocin until 7 and seeing if it progresses me; breaking my water; or stopping the Pitocin, letting me eat, and then using vaginal medicine to open and soften my cervix overnight.
We let it go until 7 since walking was helping with the contractions. When that still didn't do anything we decided to do the overnight medicine since I was still getting the contractions and restart the Pitocin in the morning. DH and I decided a long time ago that we wanted to avoid breaking my water as best we could, especially since I was not very dilated.
About 6:45 AM Thursday morning my Dr and a new Dr came in to check my progress and determined even with the medicine that I had not progressed. Since I still refused to break my water at this stage our only option was to go home. The baby is still very healthy and had shown no signs in 24 hours of being under any stress given everything that happened. We are now scheduled to go back in Tuesday night to start with the vaginal medicine and do the Pitocin the following morning. Unless this little one decides to come on her own. Thus far I am not sure that she will since I have not felt any contractions since leaving the hospital.
Hoping everything works next time! I am willing to have a C-section if need be, but I am just hoping to deliver vaginally for my first!
GL to everyone else for the rest of your deliveries...I'm sure I'll be updating next week.

Re: Failed induction-Long
This! It seems kind of pointless to schedule yourself for induction only to refuse to try to help it progress. I understand not wanting a CS, I didn't either, but it happened. My experience was fantastic and I don't love my baby girl any less because I delivered her via csection!
There are several good reasons to avoid this intervention. First of all, it puts you on the clock for delivery. For some doctors it's 24 hours, for others longer, but the baby has to come out sooner rather than later. Secondly, laboring without a broken bag of waters to cushion the baby can make their heart rate drop more easily because it's easier for them to put pressure on the cord. Usually just changing positions will fix this problems but it will mean you are more likely to end up with a c-section. Personally I wouldn't let them break my water until I was at least 6cm. I'd try changing my own position first because usually when breaking the water speeds up labor it's because the baby wasn't in the ideal position to begin with and breaking the water helps them engage. I think your attitude about a C-section is a good one - if it happens it happens, but it's still worth a try to avoid one if you can!
What surprises me is that they didn't try the Cervadil first before the pit considering how you weren't very dilated or effaced! Hopefully it will work better for you the next time around with the Cervadil placed first. Is trying a Foley Bulb an option?
Good luck!
I was curious too why you wouldn't let them break you water, it will get your contractions going, my piticin was doing nothing until my dr broke my water then it really started working.
I personally had not had any contractions leading up to my induction so when I still wasn't progressing I knew it was my body telling me it wasn't time.
I may change my mind about breaking my water to continue progress next time but not to start progress.

I also made the decision not to have my water broken during my long natural labor with my DS... for many of those same reasons you and PP mentioned. My DS had a steady happy heartrate through the whole labor, and I didn't want to risk his heart rate dropping during contractions because the water was gone. I think you listened to your body and made educated decisions for yourself and LO.
ETA: Here is to hoping you go into labor on your own before you get back for the next try at induction!
All of this. And I think you made a great decision with not having them break your water. It must not have been an easy decision to make- I remember wanting to avoid a c-section at all costs with DS, but once I was in there, I just wanted him there sooooo bad (luckily I had a smooth vaginal delivery). GL!!! Hopefully you'll make some progress this weekend.
not necessarily....having your water broken is not an automatic ticket to a c-section. For a lot of women, it helps move their labor a long quicker.
OP - best of luck!
