Babies: 3 - 6 Months

How long until milk supply affected?

I'm new to this board -- my little girl just turned 3 months old this week :)

Unfotunatly, she's been sick and her nursing has decreased dramatically the past day or so. She usually nurses every 2-3 hours but the past 36 hours it's been more like every 5 or 6. I'm incredibly engorged but more worried that her lack of nursing is going to affect my supply. Anyone have anything like this happen? Can my supply go down just in a few days of non-normal nursing? I don't have a pump, so that's not an option...

PS - I did call the DR and since she's still having wet diapers and is eating (just less often) they don't need to see her.

Re: How long until milk supply affected?

  • Personally, I would go buy a hand pump to have just in case, mine was only $30. In my experience, I have a very difficult time increasing my supply so I would try to maintain as much as possible.

Good luck and I hope baby feels better soon!

  • Even if it goes down I would think you'd be able to work it back up to normal as she begins to nurse normally again.  I wouldn't worry so long as you've never had prior milk supply issues.  Even without a pump you can hand express.  It will make you feel better if nothing else.  You can see how to do it on kellymom.com if you're interested.  HTH Smile
  • I agree with pp who said to pump.

  • I would also go buy a hand pump. It is worth it, even just for engorgement.

As for hand expressing, take a hot shower. It should help your breasts let down a lot easier. I don't think your milk supply should be affected.

  • My hospital provided a free hand pump so i was lucky there! but if u can i would get one. I had several problems with BF and in the end i had almost no supply by 5 months even with hand and electric pumps, and he lost interest =/
