Babies: 3 - 6 Months

sleeping with "loveys"

Our son absolutely loves snuggling with a soft lovey.  It's a small stuffed owl head with the blanket attached. We noticed he was rubbing it on his face and so at a sleep seminar, the pediatrician suggested to cut the blanket part down to a smaller size.  The minute it touches our son's face, he falls asleep.  But my question is it is dangerous?  I'm worried and so is my husband.  What do you guys do?  No blankies or stuffed animals?

Re: sleeping with "loveys"

  • Im a 1st time mom with a 6 month old, that being said...

I noticed my son wanted to rub his face on the mattress its self, so i ended up giving him one of those toy/blankies. I myself felt a bit better about him using that rather than the bed it self because he can easily move the toy away. I taught my son very early on how to remove anything from his face so I feel safer this way. Right now im starting to let him have a full blanket when he naps and i can check on him often, but still a sleep sack at night.

  • My LOs are still swaddled, but other than that no loveys. I'm just paranoid! If you're checking on LO frequently, I don't see a problem.

  • DS2 loves snuggling with a blanket but I'm too paranoid so I just put him to sleep with his sleep sack on and nothing else.

  • DD2 has a wubbanub, which is a small stuffy on a pacifier. It's really small, so she does have that.

There's a giraffe stuffy-blanket thing that is *IN* her crib but not really near her.

  • My DD sleeps with her musical seahorse in the crib. She loves that thing. I'm not too worried about it because she has excellent head control and has been rolling over for 2 months. We find her sometimes where she has scoooted herself over and has her arm around the seahorse. I'm also not that worried because that thing is not very plush.

  • My DS sleeps with a lovey.  He rubs his hands on it and rubs it on his face to fall asleep!  It's how he has learned to put himself to sleep.  He still sleeps in my room in the rock n play.

  • My son is 6 months and sleeps with a lovey (or two) at night and during naps.  I bought the ones made my Aden and Anais that are "breathable" with a silky edge, you can find them at Target online among other places.  They made me feel a little better knowing that he could breathe through them.  He hated to be swaddled but I also use their breathable swaddle blankets.  They are all awesome and get softer and softer the more you wash them!

My older son started sleeping with one at 6 months. I took it out of his crib after he fell asleep until he was 8 or 9 months.
