Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Would you take a 7 month old to a college basketball game?

My husband and I made plans to go to a college basketball game tomorrow and meet up with several of his college friends and their families. We really want to take DS with us so everyone can meet him, but I'm concerned about taking him to the basketball game. My biggest concern is the noise level. He freaks out about loud noises at first, but eventually gets used to them (like my hair dryer and the food processor and the constantly howling beagle). I just worry about possibly damaging his hearing if it's too loud there. Of course we would leave if he seemed too upset about it, but I'm just wondering if it's a good idea to take him at all. We took him to a couple of football games back in the fall, but he pretty much slept in the sling the whole time. Now he's so much more alert and aware of everything. I'm just wondering if it would be sensory overload for him. Thoughts?

  • My LO has been to a wedding and reception, superbowl party, pretty much everywhere I go. She will let me know if it is too much. I would go for it, and plan to be able to duck out early if you need to, for example don't carpool because the others won't want to leave, etc.

  • I would say go ahead and try it.  He might like the new experience.  They do make hearing protection headphones for babies.
  • My LO would love it.  I think you should try it.  I would be concerned with the noise level too - I would get ear plugs or something like that to put in or over his ears.

  • Only if it was an IU game. ;)

I have a good friend who took her baby boy to a (family-friendly) Mardi Gras parade and big headphones on him. Not sure if they were baby headphones but I know they helped with noise!

  • I'd take him, and I wouldn't bring hearing protection.  The game is not likely to be loud enough and definitely won't be long enough to cause permanent damage.

  • We have season tickets to our local college games, and LO has been attending since she was two months old. I would suggest some sort of noise reducing hat or headband just in case the buzzer causes LO to startle.
