Babies: 3 - 6 Months

My shoulder is KILLING me!!

And I don't know what to do with DD.  We normally do tummy/playtime, take some walks around the house (she's either being held or in the carrier) where I'm talking or singing to her, and I try to put her down for naps, but she's only 3 mos so that's still pretty hit or miss, plus she's going through her growth spurt, so everything's all out of whack.  I put her in her PNP to give myself a break, and right now she's content staring at the hanging toys either in that or in her swing, but I try so hard to interact with her as much as possible throughout the day that I feel like I'm doing something wrong by leaving her in either.  She doesn't complain, but I'm a FTM so I pretty much always feel guilty letting spinning birds to entertain her for a half hour or just letting her entertain herself period.  I'm hoping she'll doze off soon because she normally naps around this time, but any suggestions on what to do until DH gets home at 5 if she doesn't? How much alone time are you ladies giving your LOs throughout the day?

  • I have twins, so my babies had to have independent time as a matter of sheer necessity, but I think what you're doing is completely fine. It sounds like she's getting a ton of one-on-one interaction with you. Plus, babies also need time by themselves to learn different developmental and physical skills. If she's happy watching her birds, I say let her keep watching! If you were dumping her on a playmat for hours each day so you could watch Oprah that would be one thing, but giving her some independent time here and there at three months is perfectly acceptable, in my opinion.

  • As long as she seems happy, I wouldn't worry.  You can still intereact with her when you aren't holding her.  I often will put LO in the bouncer or on the floor while I eat lunch next to him and chit chat with him at the same time.

  • Are you sure you didn't steal my DD? Haha.  Mine is 14 weeks and I can hardly put this baby down.  I'm going to have a huge right arm muscle.  I have found that if I out her in the swing, she may fuss initially but I just calm her down while she's swinging and then she's usually ok on her own.  But this wasn't until the last 2 weeks.  Also, lucky me, she does not enjoy the baby wearing devices.  So it's my arms, the swing and the bouncy seat is hit or miss.

The other way I entertain her is to put The Gigglebellies videos on youtube on my iPad.  She liked them so I bought e DVD.  Some of my friends don't let their kids watch TV, but for me- WHatever Works!!!

  • I have found that i let baby play on the mat most of the day while i stay in the same room, sometimes on the floor with him, other times singing to him while i clean something up. When i go to other rooms he comes with either in a high chair or in my arms. But i give him plenty of play time alone until he lets me know he needs attetion
