Articulation in your three year old

How clearly can you understand your three year old?  I can understand my son, but there are some words where he replaces certain sounds with easier sounds.   EExample - he will say "ock" instead of "off".  "Res" instead of "yes". He can say the letter "Y" when he says "yellow", but "yes" is hard.  It is a hit or miss on what sounds he can say.  He is currently in speach therapy, but I am curious.  He will be three on Apr 28th.  He is on point with language, but  behind in articulation.

Re: Articulation in your three year old

  • My daughter is in speech therapy for articulation and your son sounds a lot like mine.  She has the beginning of words down well for the most part (gutteral sounds - c,g,k, and q are still very difficult) but she has a tendency to either leave off the ending part of 2 or more syllable words or make the ending totally different (home = ho, tea = treat,...)  Her therapist is working with her on that now.

  • Yes, she had her hearing checked about a month ago.  Her hearing is perfect.  DD is 3 years, 2 months.  There is a family history of speech delay on DH's side so I am not too concerned about her articulation being behind, especially since DH and all his siblings and father are engineers and doctors.

  • My ds will be 3 on April 20!  My ds seems to do it some as well but just with the "p" sound.  He replaces it with a "c" sound.  For example, "pajamas" becomes "cajamas."  "Potatoes" become "comatoes."  Since all of his other language is normal, I'm not too concerned because he will probably grow out of it.  I try to continue working on that sound though and will be having it checked if it is still going on by age 4.

  • cherryblossom- that def gives me some comfort.  In my heart I believe he will grow out of it, but these damn doctors get in your head.  Thx!!

  • my son also has an artic delay and sounds exactly like your child. he struggles with sounds in first position although he usually gets them in middle/last position.

there's a huge variance when sounds develop in kids. this chart may be helpful for you. it's not uncommon for y/f sounds to be poorly developed for a 2.5 year old.

This made me laugh because we had the opposite problem.  DS replaced C with P.  We felt bad for his friend Cooper.  He grew out of it though.  I think the OP's son is pretty normal.  It seems like all kids have one or two sounds they have difficulty with.  DS is almost three.  Every once in a while, I still have to translate toddler-to-English, but it's become much less frequent.
