WDYT--my 2 year old

DS has always been very advanced with his motor skills, crawling at 5.5 months, walking at 8.5 months and very physically advanced for his age.  Talking has been a lot slower and he has always been a bit behind.  He just turned two yesterday and I am little concerned about his speech/language and wanted to see what you all think.  I know he says the 50 word minimum, but mispronounces most words (for example bapapa instead of pap pap) and bu instead of bus.  Sometimes it is pulling teeth to get him to repeat a word I say, and he just recently made improvemetns with this.  He says a few sentences such as 'all done but would rather point and scream for what he wants.  Some words he will not even attempt (for example his name) and others he will just say a baby word (if I ask him to say lamp for example he may say baba).  I dont want to make something out of nothing, but my intuition is telling me something is up and needs to be addressed.

BTW, he had frequent ear infections and tubes last month.  We have seen a little bit of an improvement since then.

Re: WDYT--my 2 year old

  • We havent had DS evaluated.  I was concerned at his 15 month and he was just under the cusp of needing evaluation according to ped.  At 18 months she said lets see how he is after tubes and here we are at 2 years old. DH thinks that he is just a 'slow talker' and everyone else in the family thinks I am overreacting.

  • my son was the same way--crawling at 5 months, walking at 8.5 months. he's been in speech since 1.5. while he's made great progress he still does need work.

the two year milestone is not only 50+ words but two word phrases as well. 'all done' doesn't count as a two word phrase a speech therapist looks for since kids learn those words as a pair--it needs to be short sentences like 'mama cup'. it seems like his delays warrant an early intervention evaluation--you're not worrying over nothing.

it's also common for kids that have chronic ear infections to need extra help to get caught up to their peers and it's better sooner than later.

Ditto to all of this. I am a preschool speech language pathologist, and based on how you describe your child's speech and language skills, I would recommend an eval. Good luck!
