back to work - bottle feeding - AHHHH

DS2 has been super close to me since he was born.  I EPed for him for the first few weeks, until he got the hang of BFing.  We bed share, and he and I love it.  He typically naps in his pack n play, but on rough days, we would nap together.

Fast forward to today.  I've been back at work for 5 days.  He has taken a total of 0 ounces from a bottle.  I've gone home to feed him every day on my lunch break, which is great.  But he wants to eat more frequently than that.  Also, my DS1 throws a huge fit when I come and go in the middle of the day.

I'm very overwhelmed with returning to work, lots to catch up on, not sleeping at night due to DS being extra hungry, and the added stress of DS2 not taking a bottle.

I've tried different nipples, sippy cups, different people, in the dark, in the light, distracting DS, pretty much any suggestion someone has given me to get DS to take a bottle.  And still nothing.  I know this is a transition phase and it will get easier, but right now I'm feeling super stressed.

Does anyone have words of wisdom to offer?  TIA!!  (PS I miss my babies :( )

  • I'm so sorry! This sounds like me!

I give Elli the Dr Brown's natural flow bottles while I'm working but she never eats as much as she does while BFing. So when I get home she devours me.

Hang in there mommy it will be okay :)

  • My DD hated bottles and we struggled throughout her first year (I work FT and could not even come home at lunch).  She did eventually do better, but never did great.  I know how stressful it is!  One thing that really made a difference for her was making sure the milk was really, really warm.  If it wasn't warm enough she would spit it right out.  That's about the only tip I've got (other than waiting it out).  Different bottles/nipples, positions, etc. did zippo for her.

  • My LO refused the bottle too until we fed him in a bouncy seat, car seat or high chair. As long as he wasn't held and was facing the person feeding him, he took the bottle. It took a bit for him to figure out how to hold his tongue, but he hasn't refused a bottle since. I think he related being held (no matter who held him) to nursing. Hope it works for your LO too. GL

When H gave DS1 a bottle he would heat it up a lot hotter than I thought he should and he just shrugged and said I must have hot boobs because that's the only way he would take it. He was right though, kid liked his bottles coffee hot

  • Well this is encouraging.  At least now I have a few more strategies that I haven't tried yet!!  As much as I'd love to get the bottle feeding down, it would make my life SO much easier with being back at work.  If not though, my work has agree to let me bring LO to work with me in the morning until his first feeding at 10 am, then our nanny can come pick him up.  And she can bring him back around 2 for his next feeding.

Thank GOD for that.  That is definitely plan B though!  THank you all for the advice!
