We have a thumb sucker...

I vowed to not have a child who depends on their thumb... b/c you can't take their hand away when you're trying to wean them!  Well, I'm eating my words!  My 2.5mo LO loves it!  We've tried four different types of paci's with NO consistent success.  However, she just soothed herself to sleep sucking her darn thumb... I put her down drowsy, her eyes flew open immediately, I comforted her to let her know I was close, and she started sucking her thumb.  I watched her through the monitor and she peacefully fell asleep on her own.

  • I am so afraid of this too! So far DS is happy with trying to put his entire fist in his mouth hasn't selected a single digit. We'll see how long it lasts

  • It was pretty funny to see her struggle/experiment with ways to get the hang of it.  She'd get so frustrated and as soon as she'd latch on.... Oh Yeah!!  lol  She's an old pro already though.

I just REALLY don't want to have that 2 year old that's walking around with their thumb in their mouth.  I'm not a clean freak or a germaphobe, but I don't want my LO to be putting her hands in her mouth all the time to increase the possibility of catching something.

  • DD has been sucking on her hand big time lately, but it's been more like 3 or 4 fingers at a time. I do love when she tries to fit the whole thing in though. She gets so frustrated that it won't all go in. It's adorable.

  • We've been fighting this loosing battle too! I gave LO a paci from day 1 because she sucked her hands in the womb (we saw it on several ultrasounds) and just kept on as soon as she was born...she takes a paci, but still would prefer those hands...and she'll look right at you like "and what are you gonna do about it?!?" when she does it...

  • DD does the same thing. As concerned as I am about it being a bad habit later on, I have to admit that I really think it's adorable right now lol. She doesn't do it constantly, typically just when she's getting tired and fussy.

  • LOL - I was a former thumb sucker so I was actually very happy when my DS found his thumb.  It was great for self soothing.  I'll deal with implications later.  Now my DD I just don't know what to do with her.  She doesn't love the paci and hasn't found any fingers to love either.

  • Our lo is a thumb sucker to my great displeasure.  We've told our parents if they see her sucking her thumb to take it out.

Neither myself nor my husband sucked our thumbs, but my sister did, and I don't think she stopped until around 10yrs old and one day on the bus I say a girl around 15 or 16 sucking her thumb, I don't want that for my lo.

This is us too, but our LO has been such a cruddy napper that I just think "go for it, kid!" now. Ah, how things change when you get into survival mode. ;)

  • My LO just got an eye infection because he kept putting his mittens into his mouth and then rubbing his eyes with them :(

Just now I used a sterner than usual tone of voice when removing his hand from his mouth again and he just bawled and bawled!...

So I let him put it in again. Sigh.
